Job Description:
Position Summary

The UI/UX and Web Designer will be responsible for developing and maintaining the visual design, usability and accessibility of RETVE’s website and web application.

The position will build upon the company’s existing high-fidelity prototype and help ensure that the platform provides a clear, consistent and user-friendly experience for Veterans with different backgrounds, abilities and levels of technical experience.

The designer will work closely with the Full-Stack Web Application Developer and the management team to translate product requirements, user feedback and operational priorities into practical interface designs.

Key Responsibilities

- Review and refine RETVE’s existing UI/UX prototype.
- Design responsive web pages and application interfaces for desktop, tablet and mobile use.
- Develop user flows, wireframes, mock-ups and interactive prototypes.
- Maintain visual consistency across the dashboard, employment, resume-building, housing, government-services and social-support modules.
- Improve the clarity and usability of forms, navigation menus, filters, notifications and user-profile functions.
- Create design components, icons, layouts and visual assets required for the platform.
- Collaborate with the developer to ensure that approved designs can be implemented effectively.
- Prepare design specifications and provide guidance regarding spacing, typography, layout and interface behaviour.
- Support accessibility-focused design, including readable typography, appropriate visual contrast, clear navigation and compatibility with assistive technologies.
- Review implemented pages and identify inconsistencies between the approved design and the functioning application.
- Participate in usability testing and collect observations regarding user interaction.
- Revise platform designs based on technical limitations, stakeholder feedback and user-testing results.
- Maintain organized design files, version records and documentation.
- Assist with the visual presentation of RETVE’s website, platform demonstrations, user guides and selected promotional materials.
- Ensure that illustrations, photographs and other visual assets are appropriately licensed or owned by the company.
Job Requirements:
Education and Experience

- A diploma or bachelor’s degree in graphic design, web design, user-experience design, interactive media, digital design or a related field.
- Practical experience designing websites, web applications or digital products.
- Experience preparing wireframes, high-fidelity designs and interactive prototypes.
- Experience working with developers during the implementation of digital interfaces.
- A portfolio demonstrating relevant UI/UX or web-design work.

Required Skills

- Strong understanding of user-interface and user-experience design principles.
- Ability to create clear and intuitive user journeys.
- Proficiency with common interface-design and prototyping tools.
- Understanding of responsive and mobile-friendly design.
- Knowledge of typography, layout, visual hierarchy and colour use.
- Awareness of digital accessibility principles.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to organize and maintain design files and documentation.
- Effective written and verbal communication.
- Ability to receive feedback and revise work efficiently.
- Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical team members.

Asset Qualifications

- Experience designing employment, education, community-service or public-resource platforms.
- Experience creating accessible digital interfaces.
- Familiarity with HTML and CSS.
- Experience conducting usability testing.
- Understanding of design systems and reusable interface components.
- Experience designing platforms intended for users with different accessibility needs.
- Familiarity with privacy-conscious form and account design.
- Knowledge of the Canadian digital-services or non-profit environment.
