Responsibilities
Tasks
• Safely operate tractor-trailers during Canadian winter and adverse weather conditions, including snow, ice, freezing temperatures, heavy rain, high winds, and reduced visibility.
• Operate refrigerated tractor-trailer (reefer) units on routes throughout Alberta, transporting temperature-sensitive produce, fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, dry fruits, other food products, household and other general products.
• Pick up and deliver refrigerated and dry food products and other products to customer locations across Alberta.
• Perform detailed pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of the tractor, refrigerated trailer, tires, brakes, lights, coupling systems, air lines, doors, seals, and other safety equipment.
• Inspect and verify the proper operation of the reefer unit before loading, including temperature settings, fuel level, alarms, airflow, and refrigeration controls.
• Set and continuously monitor the required trailer temperature according to the type of produce or food product being transported
• Maintain the required cold chain throughout transportation and immediately report temperature fluctuations, reefer alarms, equipment failures, or other conditions that could affect product quality.
• Conduct regular checks of the reefer temperature refrigeration unit during long-distance trips and maintain required temperature records for pickup and delivery.
• Ensure the trailer is clean, dry, odor-free, and suitable for food transportation before accepting a new load to prevent contamination or damage to produce.
• Supervise or assist with the proper loading and unloading of produce and dry fruits, ensuring cargo is distributed
• Ensure pallets and freight are properly positioned and secured while maintaining adequate airflow inside refrigerated trailers where required for temperature-controlled products.
• Inspect and maintain trailer seals and security procedures and document seal numbers where required to maintain the integrity of food shipments.
• Maintain accurate electronic logbooks, trip inspection reports, mileage records, fuel records, reefer temperature records, bills of lading, and proof-of-delivery documentation.
• Coordinate with dispatchers, shippers, receivers, and customers regarding loading times, delivery appointments, temperature requirements, delays, route changes, and other transportation matters.
• Follow scheduled delivery appointments closely because fresh produce and temperature-sensitive freight may have strict receiving and delivery timelines.
• Perform minor emergency roadside adjustments within the driver's training and authorization
