Job Description:
Position Summary:
The Solid Waste Operations and Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising the daily operations of the solid waste yard facility, including the activities of yard workers and mechanics. The primary objective is to ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant handling, processing, maintenance, and disposal of solid waste and recyclable materials, while also overseeing the maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
• Supervision and Personnel Management:
o Supervise, train, and evaluate the performance of assigned staff, including yard workers and mechanics.
o Plan, prioritize, assign, and direct daily work schedules and routes for personnel.
o Provide guidance, mentorship, and disciplinary action as needed, fostering a productive and safe work environment.
o Coordinate with other departments (e.g., logistics, dispatch) to maintain a smooth flow of operations.
• Operations Management:
o Oversee daily yard operations, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and efficient material handling and storage.
o Monitor inbound and outbound waste shipments and manage the flow of vehicles and heavy equipment within the yard.
o Operate heavy equipment such as loaders, backhoes, and compactors as needed to facilitate operations. Preferred but not required
• Maintenance Oversight:
o Oversee the effective preventative maintenance (PM) program for all solid waste operational machinery, vehicles, and equipment.
o Coordinate and direct the activities of shop personnel, including mechanics and welders, in the repair of heavy-duty refuse trucks and other equipment.
o Track and provide recurring maintenance data reports to management and ensure accurate maintenance records are kept.
o Manage the inventory of equipment, tools, and supplies, ordering replacements as necessary.
• Safety and Compliance:
o Implement and enforce all company safety policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA).
o Conduct regular safety meetings and site inspections to identify and resolve potential hazards.
o Investigate and complete reports for work-related injuries, accidents, and incidents in a prompt manner.
• Administration and Reporting:
o Prepare clear and concise reports, documentation, and other written materials related to work performed and special projects.
o Assist with budget preparation and monitor expenditure.
o Maintain a variety of filing, record-keeping, and tracking systems for work performed, materials, and equipment use.

Job Requirements:

o Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to interact effectively with staff, public, and government agencies.
o Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and techniques of solid waste collection, disposal, and equipment maintenance.
o Proficiency in using computer software for inventory tracking, reporting, and general administrative tasks.
o Minimum of four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in solid waste operations, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory or lead role.
o Experience in a maintenance or logistics setting strongly preferred.
o MUST BE BILINGUAL: ENGLISH /SPANISH, able to read, write and speak proficiently.
• Education:
o High school diploma or GED equivalent. Specialized training or an, public administration, or a related field is a plus.
• Licenses/Certifications:
o OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour certification preferred; other waste management certifications (e.g., MOLO certification from the Solid Waste Association of North America) are beneficial.
o Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to interact effectively with staff, public, and government agencies.
