Job Summary
The Shop Manager oversees daily operations of a metal fabrication, welding, machining, or manufacturing. This role is responsible for supervising employees, ensuring production goals are met, maintaining quality standards, enforcing safety procedures, managing equipment and inventory, and coordinating workflow to deliver projects on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
• Plan, organize, and supervise daily shop operations.
• Manage production schedules to meet customer deadlines and quality requirements.
• Supervise, train, and evaluate welders, fabricators, machinists, and shop personnel.
• Ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations and company policies.
• Monitor quality control processes and inspect finished products.
• Coordinate material purchasing, inventory management, and equipment maintenance.
• Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications.
• Collaborate with engineering, sales, and project management teams to support project execution.
• Track labor hours, production efficiency, and shop performance metrics.
• Troubleshoot manufacturing issues and implement process improvements.
• Maintain accurate production records and reports.
• Assist with hiring, scheduling, and workforce planning.
Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED required; technical certification or associate degree preferred.
• 5+ years of experience in metal fabrication, welding, machining, or manufacturing.
• 2+ years of supervisory or management experience.
• Strong knowledge of metal fabrication processes, welding techniques, and shop equipment.
• Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
• Knowledge of OSHA and workplace safety standards.
• Proficiency with shop management software and Microsoft Office.
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• AWS Welding Certification or similar industry certifications.
• Experience with CNC machining, plasma cutting, laser cutting, or structural steel fabrication.
• Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma experience.
• Budgeting and project management experience.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, heat, dust, and machinery.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
