Job Description:
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – EFD Consumables Development
We are looking for a talented Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Nordson EFD Product Design Team, with a primary focus on the development of high‑volume injection‑molded consumable products used in precision fluid dispensing for advanced manufacturing and medical fluid handling.
In this role, you will lead the mechanical design and industrialization of plastic consumables, from concept through production launch. You will apply strong engineering fundamentals, structured problem‑solving, and disciplined change management to deliver robust, manufacturable, and high‑quality products at scale.
How YOU Will Make an Impact
· Lead consumable product development for high‑volume injection‑molded plastic components, taking designs from early concept through tooling release, validation, and production launch.
· Drive project technical leadership, coordinating design activities across cross‑functional teams including manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and external suppliers.
· Own DFMEA, PFMEA, and structured risk mitigation activities to ensure robust designs capable of meeting performance, quality, and regulatory requirements.
· Partner closely with external molders and tooling suppliers to optimize part design for manufacturability, cost, yield, and cycle time.
· Apply structured problem‑solving techniques (root cause analysis, DOE, failure analysis) to resolve design, manufacturing, and field issues.
· Select and validate polymer materials based on functional requirements, chemical compatibility, processability, and long‑term reliability.
· Create high‑quality CAD models and drawings (SolidWorks) including detailed GD&T, tolerances, and specifications to support global manufacturing.
· Perform tolerance stack‑ups, mold flow analysis interpretation, and FEA as appropriate to validate performance and manufacturability.
· Lead design verification and validation planning and execution; analyze results, debug failures, and implement corrective actions.
· Provide technical support to sustain existing consumable products, including quality escalations, cost‑reduction initiatives, and supply chain changes.
· Contribute to the design and integration of electro‑mechanical sub‑systems (actuators, sensors, assemblies) as a secondary responsibility.
Qualifications to Be Successful
· 8+ years of mechanical product development experience, with strong emphasis on injection‑molded plastic components and consumable products.
· Demonstrated experience leading high‑volume molded part designs through full product lifecycle, including tooling, validation, and ramp‑up.
· Strong knowledge of plastic part design, polymer selection, mold tooling fundamentals, gate/flow considerations, shrink/warp, and cosmetic requirements.
· Proven experience with DFMEA, structured change management (ECOs), and disciplined design processes.
· Hands‑on proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks) and production of clear, accurate 2D drawings with GD&T.
· Experience applying structured problem‑solving methodologies, DOE, and root‑cause analysis to technical challenges.
· Working knowledge of FEA, tolerance analysis, and interpretation of simulation results.
· Ability to create clear and effective engineering documentation, including drawings, test plans, reports, SOPs, and change orders.
· Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across global, cross‑functional teams.
· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
