Completion of formal religious training in Sikh theology or equivalent structured training under a recognized religious authority
Experience
Several years of experience (typically 2 or more years) as a Granthi or Sikh religious leader
Work Setting
Gurdwara (Sikh place of worship)
Community-based religious organization
Responsibilities / Tasks
• Conduct regular Sikh religious services in accordance with established traditions
• Perform continuous reading (Paath) and recitation from the Guru Granth Sahib Ji
• Lead Kirtan (devotional hymns) and deliver Katha (religious discourses)
• Administer Sikh religious ceremonies including weddings (Anand Karaj), funerals (Antam Sanskar), and other rites
• Provide spiritual and moral guidance to members of the congregation
• Plan, organize, and deliver religious education programs for youth and adults
• Promote Sikh teachings, values, and community engagement through religious instruction
• Participate in community outreach, humanitarian initiatives, and religious events
• Coordinate and support the scheduling and delivery of religious programs at the Gurdwara
• Collaborate with management committees and volunteers in supporting religious operations
• Supervise and coordinate activities of volunteers or staff involved in religious programs
Additional Requirements
• In-depth knowledge of Sikh scriptures, including the Guru Granth Sahib Ji
• Proven ability to perform Kirtan and deliver religious teachings (Katha)
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Punjabi language proficiency is required to accurately read, interpret, and recite from the Guru Granth Sahib Ji and to effectively communicate religious teachings and provide spiritual guidance to the congregation, the majority of whom communicate in Punjabi
• The position requires specialized religious knowledge and training in Sikh theology and practices, including the ability to perform religious ceremonies and lead services in accordance with established doctrines and traditions that are specific to the Sikh faith
Working Conditions and Physical Capabilities
• Ability to stand for extended periods during religious services
• Work may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends
