is in need of Pork Production Technician
NOC: 84120
EMPLOYMENT TERMS: Full Time – Permanent
PURPOSE: Responsible for the overall care and maintenance of the animals in the unit and ensuring that production targets are met.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working in all areas of the hog barn
1. Breeding area:
a. Carry out Company’s breeding program to ensure production targets are met, which includes Artificial Insemination
b. Identify sows/gilts in heat and cycling for optimum breeding results
c. Pregnancy checking using ultrasound equipment
d. Interpret labels, handle and administer medications and vaccines for sows/gilts
e. Monitor pig health and recognize signs of disorder (abortions, discharges, off feed, bleeding boars) and report concerns to Unit Manager or Veterinarian
2. Farrowing area:
a. Ensure proper handling and comfort of sows, gilts and piglets
b. Recognize farrowing related problems, treat common farrowing unit diseases and disorders and provide assistance
c. Monitor pig health and recognize signs of disorder (abortions, discharges, off feed, mastitis) and report concerns to Veterinarian or Unit Manager
d. Perform routine procedures with new birthed piglets (castration, clip tails and iron shots)
e. Perform cross fostering of piglets to ensure viability & perform weaning procedures
f. Weigh and transport pigs
g. Handle and administer medications and vaccines according to Medication Usage Plans (or prescriptions)
3. Nursery area:
a. Ensure proper handling and general comfort of weaner pigs
b. Carry out feeding routine for weaner pigs
c. Weigh and move pigs
d. Recognize and treat common diseases and disorders for weaner pigs
e. Monitor pig health and recognize signs of disorder and report concerns
f. Interpret labels, handle and administer medications and vaccines for weaner pigs
4. Finishing area:
a. Ensure proper handling and comfort of grower and market pigs
b. Carry out feeding routine for finishing pigs
c. Recognize and treat common diseases and disorders of finishing pigs (hernia’s, etc.)
d. Interpret labels, handle and administer medications and vaccines for finishing pigs
e. Weigh, sort and load market hogs for transport
5. Ensure proper handling of stock according to 5 freedoms from Animal Welfare Codes of Practice
6. Carry out Company programs to ensure production targets are met
7. Carry out feeding routine for piglets, sows and boars and perform routine service on feed equipment
8. Provide water for animals and perform routine maintenance on water drinkers
9. Ensure the Unit’s biosecurity protocol and Animal Welfare Codes of Practice is followed by all staff
10. Operate a high pressure washer and ensure cleanliness and sanitation standards for the Unit are met
11. Follow safe manure management procedure when cleaning out manure pits
12. Monitor and maintain proper ventilation and temperatures using automated control system
13. Ensure accurate records are kept and submitted in a timely fashion to head office
14. Responsible to act safely in performing job duties at all times and report safety concerns to the safety representative and/or Unit Manager.
15. Other duties as required

1. Participate in Company Training programs
2. To follow Company policies and procedures
3. Responsible to act safely in performing job duties at all times
4. Reporting safety concerns to the safety representative and/or Manager
WORKING HOURS: 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week; 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM (scheduled days and time may vary depending on operational requirement), weekend work required, 2 varied days off per week
WAGE/BENEFITS: $19.11/hour / Disability, Dental, Extended Medical Insurance, Employer-Provided Pension, Life and Dependent Life, AD&D, Short and Long Term Disability, 6 days paid sick leave
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Education: Completion of secondary school is required
2. Work Experience: Minimum of one year animal handling experience required
3. Good observation abilities and the ability to “think on your feet”
4. Willingness to learn
5. Patience and empathy to work with animals
6. Ability to work individually or as part of a group
7. Good written and verbal communication skills
