Job Description:
Operations Research Analyst
$107,453.00/year
Job Duties:
• Utilize knowledge of Mathematical Programming, Linear Optimization, Finance & Advance Capital Investment Analysis, Data Mining, and Enterprise Resource Planning in supporting companies’ operations.
• Depending on the nature of the problem being solved use knowledge of big data to understand the business effectiveness problem being solved. Understanding the business problem is important to determining how the mathematical models should be applied to address the key questions from the customers.
• Understand customer’s demand and behavior problems. Collect and analyze customer data, model the customer problem in advanced optimization powered packages, communicate the results to clients, and provide insight to the problem.
• Collect data from various sources, set up database and perform data transformations in a database such as Microsoft Access, Postgres, etc. to get the data ready for optimization model(s) and/or analysis. The data we require from a company could include information on all the shipments made (when shipped, how much, from where, to where), information on all products made (where made, when made, how much made), and inventory levels (how much inventory was at each warehouse or store at the end of every week or day). These data sets are large, they need to be cleaned and validated, and we need to be able to link them together.
• Formulate and apply mathematical/data process modeling, Linear Optimization, and ERP to develop and interpret information that assists management with decision making, policy formulation, or other managerial functions.
• Build the right mathematical models and algorithms for solving the problem. The mathematical models could be linear programming (LP)/mixed integer programming (MIP) optimization models, simulation models some statistical modeling or models based on financial engineering principles. The mathematical models will give our customers the insight they need to make decisions and answer questions.
• Interpret model results and put together reports in tools such as Tableau. The results of the mathematical models can be quite complex. We need to be able to interpret the results, make sure the results make sense and do not have errors, and then present the results in a way that the manager can understand. For example, we may do a study to determine the best location for a set up a new restaurant in the Bay Area. The location of such a restaurant will be driven by the demand of local people, availability of raw food and transportation costs. The data behind this decision is quite large. The analyst needs to be able to determine how to interpret this data and present it in a way that makes sense to the business manager.
• On tactical solutions help with integrating the modeling solution as part of their ERP workflow. For some of our solutions, we give our client the ability to re-run the analysis on an on-going basis. For example, the client may need to re-run an inventory analysis every month to make sure they have product to meet customer demand. To implement such a solution, our analyst needs to have strong database and SQL programming skills to allow the automatic uploading and processing of data. Our analyst should also understand the data workflow—how the client needs to interact with the data. The analyst should be able to design their database and SQL programming to fit the needs of this workflow.
• Contribute towards writing technical blogs, publish white papers, putting together technical training material etc. based on the project work. Work with the product development team to help productize intellectual property developed as part of project work.
