Position Description:
The Non Metallic Materials and Space Environmental Effects Team is seeking a hands on, detail oriented technician to support materials testing, sub scale motor and other test equipment assembly, polymer processing, and laboratory operations. This role is critical to executing test campaigns, maintaining lab readiness, and supporting development efforts across propulsion, materials, and environmental effects disciplines.
Responsibilities:
• Perform mechanical, thermal, and chemical testing on non metallic materials, including elastomers, composites, adhesives, and polymers.
• Support the assembly, setup, and operation of precision fitting mechanical components and custom test equipment.
• Conduct laboratory tasks such as mixing and curing rubber, specimen preparation, and physical property measurement.
• Prepare materials, molds, and fixtures for polymer casting and related processing activities.
• Participate in continuous improvement of lab workflows and test processes.
Additional responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
• Operate and troubleshoot LabVIEW based data acquisition and control systems.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, track consumables, uphold safety and cleanliness standards, and follow test procedures.
• Document test setups, results, observations, and deviations with high accuracy.
• Assist engineers and scientists with experimental design, tooling improvements, and prototype fabrication.

Job Requirements:
Typically, educational requirement is a High School diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or equivalent; candidate must have at least 10 years of experience and continuing education, or an associate’s degree or equivalent and at least 6 years of experience that proves mechanical aptitude and ability to work effectively without direct supervision.
• Hands on laboratory or technical mechanical experience.
• Ability to follow detailed procedures, safety protocols, and engineering instructions.
• Experience with measurement tools, test equipment, and general lab practices.
• Familiarity with non metallic materials (polymers, composites, adhesives, elastomers) or willingness to learn.
• Basic computer skills and comfort with data collection systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Polymer or elastomer casting, molding, or processing experience.
• Previous experience operating or assembling test fixtures, small scale hardware, or propulsion related equipment.
• LabVIEW proficiency for data acquisition or automation.
• Robotic equipment programming or operation experience (e.g., robotic arms, automated test equipment).
• Experience in a materials lab environment focused on non metallics or environmental effects testing.
Physical Requirements
Requires standing for extended periods of time while working in a shop/lab environment supporting testing, equipment maintenance, and fabrication of parts, and will necessitate wearing appropriate PPE including safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection when required (85%). Requires sitting for short periods of time working at a computer and participating in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at MSFC facilities to discuss technical issues (15%).
Work Environment
Work will be performed primarily in indoor labs (80%) and in a general office environment (15%). Occasional work outdoors is required (5% or less). Requires ability to interact effectively with co-workers, managers, and clients. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, and accurate communication, both verbally and in writing.
Attendance
Work assignments are normally 10-hour shifts, 4 consecutive days per week. Normal workday is 6:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday but may be adjusted to meet customer requirements or needs of employee. Regular attendance and punctuality are mandatory for meetings and other planned occasions.
Other Essential Functions
Ability to communicate effectively and work under supervision is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others. Must comply with all “drug free workplace” requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions. Must pass all applicable physicals required for this position.

Star ID will be required to obtain access to MSFC.
