Machine Shop Supervisor Job

Major Focus

* Machining support of custom tooling, fixtures, machines for Salem production operations
* CAD/CAM & machine building project management sufficient to lead and/or perform such duties when required.
* Competent to identify, select and develop skilled personnel: manual & CNC machinists, machine builders.
* Technical leadership supporting the profitable growth strategy in alignment with Nordson Values: Integrity, Respect for People, Customer Passion, Excellence, Energy.
* Meet / exceed operational effectiveness objectives & KPI measures to meet customer requirements for designs, tooling & equipment (tooling costs, scrap, on time delivery, full stream tooling inventory replenishment optimization).

Daily Engineering Supervisory Duties

* Ensure safe operation of all equipment.
* Operate in compliance with the Quality Management System – including but not limited to documentation and control of designs and procedures, calibration, and preventive maintenance.
* Support design and sustaining engineers, operations teams.
* Manage machine shop and operational business risk (equipment, creation of custom tooling, personnel)
* Manage proper care and maintenance of all machine shop equipment
* Consult and repair custom production tooling and equipment.
* Fabricate tooling, fixtures, machined components.
* Cross-train team to de-risk skilled functions
* Develop and performance manage direct reports.
* Assign, prioritize, and manage internal vs external machining services to meet objectives
* Manage supply, inventory and condition of raw materials needed by the machine shop.
* Efficient schedule and deliverable communication with internal customers
* Rewrite operational procedures and preventive maintenance procedures with improved detail and photos
* Work with purchasing, receiving, finance, engineering personnel.
* Other duties as required

Capital Project Management - As Projects are Approved

* Working with design engineer(s), estimate project cost and time to support divisional-prioritized capital project submission.
* Working with design engineers, ensure documentation accuracy of tooling and complex equipment designs
* Machine build accountability using internal, contracted, and external resources to meet budget and temporal requirements.
* Frequent budget and timeline progress reporting

Education and Experience Requirements

* Demonstrated leadership capability and/or high potential to drive a high performing organization.
* Expertise in hiring, developing and performance managing skilled machinists
* Demonstrated contribution to an engineering, design, machine shop, machine building organization.
* Certifications in technology, CNC machining, CAD/CAM, manual machining, welding, project management, resource management are considered
* A.S. or B.S. in a directly relevant technical field is desirable

Skills and Abilities

* Effective personnel and machining services growth leadership
* Ability to appreciate current machining methods and bridge with external experiences in an appropriate manner
* Machining skills sufficient to operate manual millers, lathes, or CNC machines if necessary
* Master CAM creation and use expertise
* AutoCAD Inventor and Vault expertise is desirable

* Planning skills and use of available internal and external project management tools
* Highly organized

* Operational performance metrics development and improvement (cost, quality, service)
