Job Title: Long Haul Truck Driver
MELT Training: MELT training will be provided to eligible applicants at employer's expense.
Job Location: Varies from Contract to Contract.
Job Duties:
• Operate and drive primarily tractor-trailor, long-combination vehicle and straight-body trucks to transport goods and materials over long distances
• Perform pre-trip, en route and post-trip inspection of vehicle systems, equipment and accessories such as tires, lights and turning signals, brakes and cold storage.
• Ensure cargo is secured properly in accordance with safety requirements and check on cargo at every stop during the long haul.
• Obtain special permits and other documents required to transport cargo on international routes and ensure that all documentation pertaining to travelling between states or countries is in sequence.
• Ensuing that the truck is in proper condition before setting off.
• Record cargo information, hours of service, distance travelled and fuel consumption.
• Use GPS and / or maps to trace out the most convenient route which is time and fuel efficient.
• Manually or electronically maintain log books, besides administering waybills.
• Communicate with dispatcher, other drivers and customers using communication devices and on-board computers.
• Conduct any repairs that may need to be performed especially during roadside emergency.
• May drive as part of a two-person team or convoy.
• Ensure that goods are delivered to the right destination and obtain signatures from the party to whom the goods have been delivered to.
