Job Duties:
• Plan, organize, direct and oversee greenhouse and nursery operations related to the production and care of flowers and horticultural crops.
• Determine the type and quantity of flower and plant stock to grow based on production requirements, available greenhouse space, seasonal demand and established growing schedules.
• Establish and maintain the required growing environment, including appropriate temperature, lighting, humidity, ventilation, irrigation and other environmental conditions.
• Consider water saturation, light and temperature when planning for germination and subsequent stages of plant growth and development.
• Develop and implement crop production, propagation, transplanting, feeding, irrigation and plant-care schedules to ensure healthy growth and timely production.
• Hire, train and supervise staff engaged in greenhouse and nursery production activities and establish daily work assignments and schedules.
• Supervise staff in planting, transplanting, feeding and spraying flowers and other horticultural stock, ensuring established growing procedures and quality standards are followed.
• Direct agricultural crops clipping activities and oversee deleafing horticultural crops activities to promote proper plant development, quality and production.
• Oversee and participate, when required, in specialized plant-care activities, including tying and securing plants to support proper growth and prevent plant damage.
• Monitor flowers and plants for pests, diseases, weeds and other crop-health concerns; control reported insect, disease and weed problems and determine appropriate corrective or preventative measures.
• Monitor crop development, plant quality, losses and production levels, and adjust growing conditions and care schedules when necessary.
• Order materials and stock, including fertilizers, growing media, plant-care products, greenhouse supplies, equipment and other materials required for nursery and greenhouse operations.
• Maintain records related to plant stock, crop production, inventory, materials, production losses and other operational information.
• Coordinate the movement and availability of flower and plant stock to ensure production schedules and operational requirements are met.
• Ensure greenhouse and nursery activities are carried out in accordance with workplace safety procedures, company standards and applicable agricultural practices.
Working Conditions:
• Work in wet, damp, strong odours, dust, cold environments, outdoors, noisy.
• Heavy workloads, stand, bend, crouch, and kneel.
• Job is physically demanding, ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
