Main duties
• Plan, organize, direct, control, and evaluate the activities and operations of the engineering department, including project planning, staffing, resource allocation, scheduling, budgeting, workflow coordination, and service delivery.
• Develop, implement, and maintain departmental policies, technical-work procedures, quality-management processes, document-control requirements, project coordination standards, and best practices for engineering and technical work performed by the department.
• Manage and coordinate the company's portfolio of electrical systems projects involving power distribution, emergency power and UPS systems, lighting, grounding and bonding, fire detection and alarm systems, telecommunications, electronic security, instrumentation and controls, building automation, industrial automation, and related electrical infrastructure.
• Oversee project scope, priorities, schedules, staffing, consultant and vendor coordination, deliverables, and operational handover for electrical, automation, control, and multidisciplinary engineering projects, without independently performing or approving regulated professional engineering work unless appropriately licensed to do so.
• Meet with clients, internal stakeholders, contractors, vendors, consultants, and project partners to understand business and project requirements, coordinate scopes of work, establish project priorities, budgets and schedules, and arrange appropriate technical input from qualified project personnel and licensed professional engineers where required.
• Assign, coordinate, supervise, and monitor the work of engineers, designers, technologists, technicians, consultants, and project teams; establish responsibilities; review project progress; and ensure deliverables are completed efficiently, on schedule, and within approved budgets.
• Manage the internal review and quality-control process for calculations, drawings, specifications, equipment selections, control documentation, technical reports, and other project deliverables, and ensure documents requiring professional engineering review, authentication, or sealing are referred to and completed by the responsible licensed professional engineer.
• Coordinate electrical systems work with mechanical, piping, architectural, interior design, construction, commissioning, automation, AI and other project disciplines, as well as with clients, contractors, suppliers, authorities having jurisdiction, and external consultants.
• Plan and control departmental and project budgets, staffing levels, resource allocation, design and delivery schedules, consultant and vendor requirements, project risks, change management, and engineering expenditures to support cost-effective and timely project delivery.
• Lead project-management reviews, peer-review coordination, value-engineering workshops, field-investigation planning, commissioning coordination, deficiency tracking, design-change workflows, and risk-management activities, while ensuring technical matters requiring professional engineering judgment are handled by appropriately licensed professionals.
• Recruit, train, mentor, supervise, and evaluate engineering and technical personnel; establish project responsibilities; support professional development; and oversee the maintenance of staff competence in required technical and project-delivery areas.
• Provide management leadership for advanced electrical, automation, and control initiatives, including motor and servo control, industrial sensing, machine vision, embedded control systems, data acquisition, IoT-connected systems, and smart-facility technologies, and coordinate qualified technical resources for their evaluation and implementation.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and sustainable electrical solutions from a project-planning and business perspective, including solar power, EV charging, smart microgrids, electrification, intelligent monitoring, and energy-efficiency measures, and coordinate technical assessments by qualified engineering personnel where required.
• Ensure departmental workflows and project quality-management processes address applicable Canadian and project-specific codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and professional-practice obligations, and ensure regulated engineering decisions and professional documents are reviewed and authenticated by the appropriate licensed professional engineer.
• Coordinate project troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, technical escalations, and operational handover activities, and ensure issues that require professional engineering analysis, advice, or approval are referred to qualified licensed professional engineers.
• Prepare departmental and project reports, staffing and resource plans, budget updates, project-status reports, risk summaries, and management recommendations, and support the company's engineering strategy, service development, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Employment requirements
• A bachelor's degree in engineering is required. A master's degree in engineering or a related technical field is considered an asset.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in electrical, electronic, automation, controls, embedded systems, industrial systems, or a closely related engineering discipline is required.
• 5+ years of management or functional leadership experience in engineering projects, including supervisory, project leadership, technical-team coordination, departmental management, resource planning, or engineering-management responsibilities, is required.
• Experience in industrial automation combining electrical and electronic engineering with robotics, motor and motion control, machine vision, embedded systems, IoT, smart-factory systems, data acquisition, or predictive monitoring is considered a strong asset.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia is considered an asset for this managerial position, but is not a condition of employment where the role remains within a business and management scope.
• Exceptional communication, client coordination, organization, time-management, problem-solving, team leadership, budgeting, and project-management skills are required.
• Ability to manage multiple engineering projects and priorities independently while coordinating multidisciplinary technical teams is required.
