Director of Equine Sciences and Wagonhound Land and Livestock Chair Job

The Director of Equine Sciences will provide leadership and program direction for research, teaching, and outreach/engagement activities in the Equine Sciences program, as they relate to the overall goals of the Animal Sciences Department. The Director will report to the Head of the Department of Animal Sciences. The Director will provide vital guidance and leadership for the anticipated future hiring of several new equine focused faculty positions with varying combinations of teaching, research, and outreach/extension appointments. Fostering multidisciplinary collaboration with adjacent research and teaching facilities (i.e., CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory, CSU Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory, CSU Research Innovation Center, etc.) is also expected. High level staff supervision, oversight of the CSU Equine Teaching and Research Center along with animal well-being, and financial management is expected. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications and is a 12 -month appointment. Further, this position oversees the annual allocation of proceeds from the Wagonhound Land and Livestock endowment. The candidate in this position may conduct equine focused research and will provide leadership and mentorship in coordinating the success of faculty and staff involved in equine focused research and teaching activities.

These activities include areas such as reproduction, nutrition, genetics, behavior, welfare, exercise physiology, and equine-assisted services. This position may include training or mentoring of graduate students. Significant involvement in outreach and engagement with equine industry partners is expected. This includes establishment and maintenance of industry relationships and mutually beneficial agreements, acquisition of grant awards, and gift fundraising. Involvement with equine industry organizations is expected, including through service in leadership positions. This position may include some teaching activities at the capstone level and through guest lectures. There is also an expectation to actively participate in student education via support of equine related curricular development and delivery, interaction with students, student recruitment, student placement into internships and career positions, as well as participation in current and future horse adoption and sales events and other departmental activities. The distribution of effort between Research and Instruction is negotiable upon the selection of a final candidate.

Completed Ph.D. degree in Animal or Equine Science or closely related field or DVM with advanced research training (i.e., M.S., board certification with specialty, etc.) from an accredited institution by start date.
Possess excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and mentorship to a team.
Demonstrated knowledge of the U.S. horse industry.
Possess a record of research accomplishments consistent with the academic rank of associate or full professor, including a strong scientific publication record.
Evidence of grantsmanship and the capability to obtain extramural research funding.
Exhibited abilities in, or the potential for, successful fundraising.
Prior experience in budget, facility, and personnel management.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S by the time of appointment start date.

The Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University supports Colorado’s vast and diverse equine and livestock industries and is responsible for educating approximately 1000 undergraduate and 60 graduate students annually. Programs of study are offered to students majoring in Equine Science and Animal Science. The Equine Science major is supported by nationally recognized teaching, research, and outreach programs and consists of 12 faculty members and roughly 325 undergraduate and graduate students. The CSU main campus sits at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountains one hour north of metro Denver.
