The Office of the County Counsel is recruiting for Senior Paralegals who serve as leads to other lower level Paralegals and Paralegal Interns in support of attorneys. Senior Paralegals operate with a high degree of independence, original writing and discretion in pursuing appropriate courses of action in addition to assisting attorneys in the preparation of cases for trial and hearing matters.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
1) A background investigation will be conducted, including a DOJ/FBI fingerprint check and drug screening.

2) A major portion of all investigations are conducted in the field. Travel throughout the County is required. A valid California Class C driver license is required throughout employment and must be maintained. Employees in this class will need to show proof of automobile liability insurance.

3) All position locations are subject to rotation based on the needs of the department. Offices are located throughout the County.

4) Trainees must demonstrate successful work performance to qualify for promotion to Public Defender Investigator within 9 months or be terminated.

Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must meet both the experience requirement AND one of the educational options listed below:

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time experience in propounding and responding to discovery, researching and drafting legal pleadings, responding to Public Records Act requests or other document production requests, preparing legal research memoranda.

Education:

Option 1: A certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association.

Option 2: A certificate of completion of a paralegal program at, or a degree from, a post-secondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester (36 quarter), or equivalent, units in law-related courses that has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the Bureau of Private Post-secondary and Vocational Education.

Option 3: A baccalaureate degree or an advanced degree in any subject, a minimum of one (1) year of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three (3) years or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three years, and a written declaration from this attorney stating the applicant is qualified to perform legal tasks.

Desired Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess:

An advanced level of experience, knowledge and ability to assist with the review and preparation of complex legal documents and matters.
A high level of independence and ability to produce original writings.
Complex legal research from a variety of sources.
Ability to prepare procedures to reflect changes in the law and provide appropriate training.
Lead/supervisory skills to identify and recommend changes in staff workloads and assignments to direct workflow.
Paralegal experience assisting attorneys with civil litigation and/or experience working in a public sector organization is highly desirable.
