Position Title: Civil Engineering Technologist – Avalanche Engineering
Location: 602a Josephine St., Nelson, BC
Company: 6 Point Engineering
Wage: $44/hr
Hours: 30-40/week

Position Overview
6 Point Engineering is seeking a motivated and safety-focused Engineering Technologist to support avalanche engineering, mountain infrastructure, and geohazard projects in complex alpine environments. The successful candidate will work alongside senior engineers and avalanche professionals on projects involving avalanche risk assessments, infrastructure planning, field investigations, terrain analysis, and operational safety support for engineering field teams.
This position combines office-based engineering tasks with physically demanding fieldwork in remote mountain terrain and requires a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist with avalanche engineering and geohazard assessment projects for transportation, mining, ski area, and infrastructure clients.
• Support avalanche risk assessments for engineering field teams operating in mountainous terrain.
• Participate in field investigations including terrain mapping, snowpack observations, slope assessments, and infrastructure inspections.
• Assist in preparation of technical reports, risk assessments, design drawings, and engineering documentation.
• Perform and support structural and civil engineering designs.
• Work in steep, exposed, and high-angle alpine terrain using rope access techniques where required.
• Participate in operational safety planning and hazard mitigation activities.
• Coordinate with engineers, geoscientists, avalanche forecasters, and field crews.
• Maintain a high standard of field safety, communication, and professionalism.
Required Qualifications
• Diploma/Certificate in Civil Engineering Technology or related technologist program.
• 3 years of experience in a similar role
• Canadian Avalanche Association Level 2 (CAA Level 2) certification.
• SPRAT or IRATA Level 1 Rope Access certification.
• Valid driver’s license with ability to travel to remote project locations.
• Physically capable of working in mountainous terrain and adverse winter weather conditions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, RAMMS, dsCivil 3D, GIS, QGIS, or related engineering software.
Preferred Qualifications / Assets
• Occupational First Aid Level 3 (OFA Level 3).
• Experience with avalanche operations, mountain safety, or geohazard fieldwork.
• Experience working around helicopters, snowmobiles, ATVs, or winter field operations.
• Registration or eligibility for registration as an AScT in a Canadian jurisdiction.
Working Conditions
• Combination of office and field-based work.
• Frequent travel to remote mountain environments.
• Exposure to snow, glaciated terrain, steep or vertical terrain, helicopters, and variable weather conditions.
• Field rotations may involve extended days in alpine environments.
