Cabinetmakers Job

Study Plans and Specifications:
Review blueprints, drawings, or specifications of items to be made, or prepare specifications to determine dimensions and materials required.

Marking and Measuring:
Outline dimensions of parts on wood using measuring tools to ensure accuracy.

Operating Woodworking Machines:
Use machines such as power saws, jointers, mortisers, and shapers, along with hand tools, to cut, shape, and form parts and components.

Assembly:
Trim joints and fit parts together using glue and clamps; reinforce joints with nails, screws, or other fasteners to form complete units.

Finishing:
Sand wooden surfaces and apply veneers, stains, or polishes to complete products.

Repair and Restyling:
Fix or modify wooden furniture, fixtures, and related products as needed.

Material Estimation:
Estimate the amount, type, and cost of materials required for projects.

Education:

Completion of secondary school is usually required.

Training and Experience:

Entry-level candidates are welcome.

Completion of a cabinetmaking program or related training is an asset.

On-the-job training is usually provided.

A four-year apprenticeship program or over four years of work experience in the trade may be required for trade certification (voluntary in all provinces and territories).

Red Seal endorsement is available for qualified cabinetmakers upon passing the interprovincial exam.

Skills:

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings

Strong attention to detail and precision

Manual dexterity and experience with woodworking tools and machines

Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

Physical stamina and strength for handling materials and standing for long periods

Understanding of workplace safety procedures
