Job Description:
Supporting the company’s international tea import operations by serving as a communication bridge between the U.S.-based management team and Chinese-speaking suppliers. More specifically,
1. Translate written materials from Mandarin Chinese to English and vice versa, including contracts, purchase orders, product specifications, customs declarations, and certification documents related to tea; Collaborate with colleagues to compile helpful information, including Davidson’s terms and definitions, into an organized glossary for regular reference during the translation process; In order to enhance business negotiations the interpreter must be aware of the subtle language and cultural nuances that affect business communication and negotiations for both parties.
2. Translate messages, live speeches and voice communication recordings during business negotiations, tea tastings and virtual meetings with Chinese suppliers and partners; Localize tea product descriptions and promotional content for U.S. customers, ensuring accurate representation of origin, flavor notes, and cultural background; Assist in verifying the accuracy of Chinese labels, organic certifications, and trade documentation to ensure compliance with U.S. import regulations.
3. Collaborate with the procurement team to interpret technical details about tea processing, seasonal harvest cycles, and quality grading systems (e.g., Oolong, Pu’er); Support the marketing team in creating culturally sensitive storytelling materials that reflect the heritage and history of the tea origins; Translate the verbal cues, as well as nonverbal cues from both parties in order to provide an accurate interpretation of the words spoken. Accurately convey Davidson’s clients’ message and intentions.
4. Maintain and update a bilingual glossary of tea-related terms to ensure consistency and precision in all communications; Verify, modify and edit translations to compensate for discrepancies in technical terms and to guarantee that the final content is consistent with original material. Use technology for presentations, to facilitate meetings, or to assist the clients in communicating with Davidson’s. Translate documents and texts for both Davidson’s and clients in a quick, efficient and accurately.
5. Provide cross-cultural business insights to help management navigate traditional Chinese business etiquette and regional communication styles in the tea trade; Analyze clients and listen to debriefings on what materials will be translated, to best assess how to present interpreted data. Identify terms and words with conflicting meanings to determine which alternative provides clarity and reflects the original purpose of the message from the contracts.
