Asbestos Abatement Specialist – Role Overview
The Asbestos Abatement Specialist is responsible for safely performing and overseeing the removal of asbestos and other hazardous materials at residential and commercial sites. The role includes ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, maintaining proper containment and decontamination procedures, supervising crew members, and supporting the successful completion of remediation projects through effective site management and reporting.
• Perform and supervise asbestos, mold, lead, and hazardous material removal projects
• Conduct daily site inspections and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company procedures
• Prepare daily reports on work progress, safety, and site conditions
• Set up containment areas and safely handle and dispose of hazardous materials
• Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain a safe work environment
• Train and guide crew members on safe work practices
• Coordinate with supervisors and clients regarding project updates and site conditions
• Maintain cleanliness and proper decontamination of work sites
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Completion of secondary school; post-secondary training or relevant trade experience in construction, environmental services, or hazardous material abatement is an asset
• Minimum 1–3 years of experience in asbestos abatement, hazardous materials removal, or related field
• Valid Level 2 Asbestos Abatement Certificate (required)
• WorkSafeBC certification levels (Level 1, 2, 3, and Supervisor level “S”)
• Valid First Aid Certificate and WHMIS certification
• Additional industry certifications such as CMS (Contents Management Specialist), WRT (Water Restoration Technician), and AMRT (Applied Microbial Remediation Technician) are considered strong assets
• Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, coordinate tasks, and enforce safety procedures on-site
• Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations, hazardous materials handling, and contamination control procedures
• Ability to read and follow work plans, safety procedures, and site instructions
• Good communication and reporting skills for preparing daily reports and coordinating with team members
• Physically capable of performing demanding work, including lifting, bending, and working in hazardous environments
• Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and commitment to safety standards
