The University of Oregon's Information Services division seeks an experienced AI focused Application Developer to lead the integration and implementation of AI-powered solutions across campus using existing AI models and services. This role will focus on leveraging AI platforms to rapidly develop and deploy AI applications that enhance university operations and student services.

Reporting to the Associate CIO of Customer Experience (CX) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the AI Solutions Architect will provide technical leadership on the development of AI Solutions; new and improved campus AI IT services; innovative approaches to solving research, curricular, and instructional needs; and efficiencies to streamline operations and create capacity for higher value work. This position is focused on solving complex challenges that require innovation, creativity, and a strong technical foundation to design and deliver technical solutions at scale. The AI Solutions Architect possesses the authority to carry out management decisions and is seen as a lead individual contributor requiring specialized education and experience.

This position makes and informs decisions at a high level which has university-wide implications and impact. The AI Solutions Architect is responsible for understanding university-level strategies and working closely with stakeholders to understand needs, and opportunities for innovation. The AI Solutions Architect develops the technical vision, designs scalable and secure solutions, leads prototypes and pilots, and supports the transition to operations. This position will provide technical demos, educational and/or training sessions to IS teams, customers, and stakeholders.

This position will participate in strategic planning including goals and objectives for the CX/AI Team that support the University’s goals for student success, administrative process improvement, and research and teaching. The AI Solutions Architect will develop, implement, and assess performance of short and long-term goals, objectives, and roadmaps, ensuring alignment with university and IS strategic needs, initiatives, and plans.

This position will serve on committees and task forces when participation will enhance the development and meet the needs of the department and campus. The AI Solutions Architect will collaborate with major constituencies including researchers, faculty, staff, senior management, academic and non-academic administrators, managers, supervisors, and community members. The AI Solutions Architect will foster and maintain relationships nationally across higher ed to facilitate collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or equivalent years of education and experience.
• 1 year of design and implementation experience in AI applications or related technologies.
• Experience with AI services and APIs.
• 4 years of hands-on experience in IT Operations or Development.
• Technical presentation experience (e.g., whiteboard, small and large group presentations).
• Software development skills, particularly in languages commonly used for AI integration (e.g., Python, JavaScript).
• Familiarity with building contexts and deploying large language models and their applications.
• Ability to develop end-to-end applications that incorporate AI capabilities.

• Understanding of privacy considerations in higher education (FERPA, NIST, CMMC).

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with AI cloud services, particularly in AI/ML (e.g., Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker, Azure platforms)
• Experience with containerization and microservices architectures
• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
