Position Description:
This position is part of the Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) support to the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract to the NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate. The primary focus of this position is manufacturing large aluminum aerospace structures using fusion welding and friction stir welding processes. However, this isn’t a welding engineering position. Education and experience relevant to this position will be evaluated from that perspective. The position's primary responsibilities are to:
Collaborate with design engineering, materials engineering, NDE, quality, and production teams to develop manufacturing processes for large, welded aluminum assemblies, ensuring compliance with NASA, aerospace, and internal quality standards. Support production readiness reviews, process hazard analyses, and manufacturing risk assessments for major parts. Mentor junior and mid career manufacturing engineers in manufacturing engineering fundamentals.
The selected candidate serves as communication or focal point over a particular engineering discipline, effort or scientific initiative. The selected candidate provides professional, consultation, technical and engineering skill services (including innovative approaches where appropriate) to resolve unprecedented/complex problems pertaining to design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of systems, subsystems, and components. The selected candidate initiates and maintains extensive contacts with key engineers/scientists and officials of other organizations and companies, requiring skill in deliberating, advising, advising, advocating, and negotiating resolution of critical issues.

A degree in Manufacturing Engineering or related field is required. A degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a master’s degree with at least 13 years of experience, or B.S. with at least 15 years of experience. Relevant candidate work experience will be evaluated against ESSCA contract engineering labor categories.
The candidate is required to have:
• Previous experience planning the manufacture of aerospace structures or other critical, low production rate items (e.g. nuclear power systems or components, space systems, medical devices, industrial gas turbines, rail and heavy transportation, maritime and shipbuilding (naval especially) or oil and gas equipment (pressure vessels, subsea hardware), etc.). Key attributes are:
o Low production rate.
o Highly engineered.
o Safety- or mission-critical.
o Regulated or requiring extensive traceability.
o Built with complex manufacturing process flows.
• Previous experience developing paperless (electronic) manufacturing execution system plans (e.g. Solumina, Siemens Opcenter, Plex Smart Manufacturing, etc.).
• The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain permission to operate customer-owned vehicles in support of work activities. The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, automobile liability insurance and successfully complete a company defensive driving training class.
Desired qualifications and experience (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as a selection factor):
• Experience planning and supervising the manufacture of welded aircraft, missile or rocket structures.
• Experience developing manufacturing plans in Solumina.

Star ID will be required to obtain access to MSFC.
