I find that I excel in positions where I work with both technologists and non-technical members of an organization, trying to figure out how to accomplish the goals of both groups. It seems like IT would be the ideal field for that type of work, so that's where I'm looking to start my career!
- Web developer
- April 2019 - July 2020
-- Last summer, I did a complete redesign of the website for Rootstalk: A Prairie Journal of Culture, Science, and the Arts. They previously were only posting PDFs of their print layout, so I created a design that integrates with the print design but with stories now truly interactive and web-based.
I devised a workflow to convert articles in InDesign to Markdown, which we then upload to the website, which was built using Hugo, HTML5, CSS3, and jQuery. I then created written documents, presentations, and a video tutorial to train the editors on the new workflow I had devised for posting new content to the site.
Grinnell College Press
- Editor in chief
- Jan 2017 - April 2020
-- Grinnell College Press provides a platform for student work by designing and publishing about 4 standalone publications per semester.
As EiC, I would work with the authors and artists to draft a design and format which fits their work. Then I, along with a few other student editors and illustrators, would lay out the publication, coordinate prepress with one of our printing companies, and distribute them around campus.
I used Adobe InDesign for layout, SharePoint and OneDrive for collaboration and content management, and built our website using Hugo and AWS.
