I am a general surgeon who, over the past 20 years, started and developed a very successful solo private practice in San Jose, California. While being successful in my practice, I have also been active in our hospital medical staff leadership, chairing and participating in key committees, organizing programs, updating protocols and working with my colleagues to support our hospital and provide excellent surgical care to our community. My website: http://www.jpsiegelmd.com
Unfortunately, over the past 5 years I have experienced a progressive deteriorate in my hearing acuity despite using increasingly powerful hearing aid appliances and equipment for the hearing impaired. While I can hear and understand conversations under normal circumstances, I have found it increasingly difficult to function safely and effectively in situations unique to surgeons. I therefore have decided to retire from my surgical practice and instead seek opportunities within the health science realm that will allow me to apply my experience, fund of knowledge, organizational and interpersonal skills that have helped me be so successful as a practicing surgeon. While I acknowledge that this will be a profound change in my career practice paradigm, I also believe that I have much insight to contribute, much energy and enthusiasm to apply to projects and products that eventually may be used clinically.
My practice has been rewarding and immensely satisfying. I enjoy challenges, am easy to work with and my insight, judgement and demeanor have earned the respect of my colleagues. My decision to leave clinical practice is not based on "burnout" or disgruntlement or exasperation with insurance companies, nor have I been forced to retire because of lack of patients or a series of misadventures that might suggest incompetence. My decision is a preemptive one, based upon my genuine concern for the safety my patients going forward and the fact that I am still young enough and versatile enough to adapt to a new career environment and remain a useful contributor to my life's work.
