Type of Position: Contractor Availability Date: now
Desired Wage:
U.S. Work Authorization: Yes
Job Level: Management (Manager, Director) Willing to Travel:
Highest Degree Attained: Willing to Relocate: Yes

Objective:
To find employment as a writer, editor, manager, proofreader, or any other position for which I qualify.

Experience:
Self-employed (1994-present)
Free-lance Writer

I am a free-lance writer with numerous published works, including promotional copy, feature articles, humor and technical articles. I have written a monthly real estate column for a regional publication for several years, and was a featured humor columnist with the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (Ontario, CA). I have ghost-written a book, and authored a screenplay as well as a memoir. (View samples of my writing at www.billireland.com.)

Duties: A free-lance writer must be able to acquaint himself quickly with a wide range of subjects. He must locate the people and documentary sources that can shed light on a topic, gather the appropriate information, and assemble it in an understandable and engaging form for readers. This calls for skills in interviewing, organization, management and research as well as written communication.

The writer must adjust style, tone and vocabulary to fit the intended audience and medium. The requirements for a technical or informational article are very different from a promotional or humor piece. When writing for periodicals, it is also imperative to become familiar with the target publication and its reader demographic, and to tailor each project precisely to the client’s needs.

Whatever the medium, a writer must produce professional copy that is clear and error-free. And he must be comfortable working within deadlines. This requires discipline, focus, an ability to manage time, and a capacity to perform well under pressure. An effective writer must also be comfortable approaching people in every sphere of life, soliciting their opinions and expertise. He must discern overarching themes and patterns in the data he collects, and weave those into his work. It is a challenging and fulfilling vocation.

In all my writing projects, I have been professional and conscientious, meeting my deadlines and providing quality products for my clients.

Prudential California Realty (1999-present)
Real Estate Sales Agent Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I represent clients in the sale and purchase of real property. This includes houses, condominiums, land, and commercial property. My wife and I have handled transactions throughout southern California — from Santa Ana to Victorville, from West Covina to Riverside — and most places in between. I’ve also been fortunate to combine my real estate knowledge with my writing, providing a monthly column on real estate trends for a regional magazine.

Duties: A real estate agent's job begins with locating the people who may want to buy or sell property. This calls for old-fashioned persistence and considerable skill in persuasion — not to convince them to buy or sell, but to persuade them to choose one particular agent over the other 600,000 in California. Then, the agent can begin helping the client accomplish his or her goals. He'll start by collecting property information and market data, combining input from several sources to arrive at an accurate assessment of value. That is usually followed by a period of intensive marketing, complex negotiations, and the coordination of numerous services to achieve the desired end: a successful sale.

Along the way, a good agent employs a wide range of marketing activities: devising and executing promotional campaigns, writing sales copy for print and the web, writing letters of recommendation for clients, and many other language-intensive tasks. He must master the language of persuasion, while being precise and circumspect in every statement. The stakes are high: for most people, the sale or purchase of a home is the largest transaction they will ever undertake. Their money and their lives are on the line. A conscientious agent never forgets that. To maximize his client's advantages, he also stays informed of current real estate law and market trends. Embracing this responsibility can be very fulfilling. Even though I'm primarily employed as a writer now, I still welcome the opportunity to help people in this important area of their lives.

In the course of marketing our family business and the properties we list, I have become proficient at writing promotional copy for mailers, flyers, print ads and websites. I have also studied website design, which allowed me to produce the layout and copy for our website, www.irelandteam.com.

New Life Service Company (1979-2005)
Owner/Operator Los Angeles, CA

For over 25 years, I operated a leather upholstery restoration service, geared toward the insurance industry and the luxury car market in Los Angeles. My clients included all major insurance companies, Mercedes-Benz of North America, Rolls Royce of Beverly Hills, Maserati Motor Cars, and numerous high-profile figures in the fields of sports, business and entertainment.

Duties: As an owner/operator, I had the responsibility of overseeing every aspect of my business: sales, customer relations, job estimates, materials acquisition, project completion, accounting and collections. I also wrote promotional literature and conducted seminars for insurance adjusters. It was important to stay informed of current technologies, and I used this knowledge to devise innovative solutions for my clients’ problems.
