Job Description:

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami in Miami, FL, invites applicants for a Temporary Research Associate I position (no benefits). We seek an individual to join our Ecosystem Assessment and Modeling group and support coastal fieldwork and ocean chemistry laboratory analyses in the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division in Miami, FL.

This position will utilize a solid foundation in coastal fieldwork data collection and lab analysis techniques, including chemical oceanography laboratory work. Beneficial experience can include work in environmental data analyses and habitat modeling. Certification in small boat operations preferred but not required.

Responsibilities include:



  • Processing and database entry and management of inorganic nutrient analyses from water samples.

  • Participate in and provide logistical support for fieldwork, including large research vessel cruises as well as small boat fieldwork operations.

  • This work will be done in hot temperatures, sometimes adverse weather conditions and at sea on boats.

  • When necessary, assist the group in other laboratory sample analyses and data entry,database management as well as computational and statistical analysis when required.


Requirements:

Candidates for this position should have a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Oceanography, or a related field experience, and a minimum of one year (more preferred) of demonstrated experience in (1) Ocean chemistry laboratory work or related lab work (2) participating in and leading field surveys including small boat driving experience (3) the ability and desire to work as part of a collaborative team, including during overnight research vessel surveys and fieldwork trips away from Miami for up to 10 days at a time, and (4) excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills, good organizational skills, meticulous laboratory methods, and the ability and availability to assist and support fieldwork trips.

The position will be located at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division in Miami, FL.
