About This Position

The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG) at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine has an exciting career opportunity for a Sr. Manager, Research Support. The Sr. Manager, Research Support is to provide administrative and scientific support and assistance to the Director of the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics. Establishes policies and standard operating protocols and provide guidance within assigned program areas to support the accomplishment of program objectives. Develop, coordinate and advise administrative staff regarding program policy. Lead communications team. Assist in scientific technical writing and in publications and manuscript preparation.

The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:



  • Establishes Program policies and standard operating protocols; develops and maintains research standards of the HIHG. Plans, coordinates, and administers activities of assigned programs to include developing, implementing, and supervising related procedures, processes, services and systems; trains employees in proper methods and procedures and ensures correctness of work for grant submissions.



  • Assists institute director with journal article submissions. Formats manuscripts, references, tables, and figures to adhere to journal requirements. Ensures compliance with federal guidelines to Open Access Law by uploading research papers to federal repository.



  • Oversees research efforts in several research grants and solving any problems as they arise. Identifies funding opportunities for faculty members. Assists institute director in all federal and private grant applications. Develops budget justifications, updating personnel documentation such as CV's, other support documents, and Biosketches. Ensures grant applications are complete. Ensures that all documents are uploaded by deadlines.



  • ​Support various research programs and solve any problems with programs and/or involved agencies as they arise. Maintains liaison with other programs, offices, departments, and institutions to coordinate program business and accomplish program objectives, to include interface with external organizations as appropriate to ensure cooperative efforts are enhanced and available resources are utilized.



  • ​Monitors programmatic budget limitations and identifies and makes recommendations for cost reduction



  • ​Monitors and ensures good data acquisition and data management processes. Coordinates the preparation of quarterly and annual reports on the institute's activities as requested.



  • ​Develops and executes all collateral materials for institute including flyers, news releases, brochures, posters, and banners. Ensures compliance with medical school marketing branding standards. Coordinates work with all outside vendors. Works with finance department to ensure vendors are paid. Acts as a liaison to medical school communications department responding to media inquiries. Fact-checks articles. Develops background material for reporters, VIPs, donors, and study participants.



  • ​Oversees, evaluates and monitors on-the-job performance of staff. Supervises communications team. Conducts yearly reviews, monitors, and assesses performance. Keeps institute staff informed of communications procedures and policies.



  • ​Conducts meetings with the research staff, and ensures functions are coordinated in a timely and accurate manner according to established guidelines.



  • ​Administers the annual JJ Vance Memorial Summer Internship in Biological and Computational Sciences. Assist with all financial matters dealing with the interns and mentors, and acts as a liaison between the institute and any high schools, funding agencies, and educational groups. Oversees recruiting efforts, manages admissions process, and supervises group of 12 high school interns. Ensures compliance with HR policies. Prepares annual progress reports about the program for the NINDS.



  • Writes award nominations, Power Point talks, speeches, letters of recommendation, letters of support, and other communications material for director. Provides copy-editing assistance to faculty and staff members. Edits correspondence from outreach staff to donors and study participants.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, or a closely related field of study. Possess at least five years of work experience in public relations, communications, or sponsored research. Knowledge of business and management principles. Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations. Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan. Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others. Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
