Job Description:
Founded in 1982 as the Refugee Women’s Program, Refugee Transitions (RT) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit agency providing free education, family engagement, and community leadership program services to people who have sought refuge in the U.S. With a current budget of approx. $1,500,000, the agency serves 2,500 refugees, asylees, and immigrants throughout the Bay Area.


Title: Director of Development and Communications

Current Time Commitment: 40 hours/week. Will consider fewer hours (30 needed for full benefits)

Salary: You will receive $80,000 (depending on experience, track record and qualifications) as well as medical and dental coverage, accrued vacation time, paid holidays (that fall on the employee's workday), accrued sick time, and eligibility for RT’s retirement plan after 1 year of employment.

Location: You will work primarily in San Francisco (with time spent in Oakland and San Jose as needed) and report to the Executive Director

Refugee Transitions seeks a Director of Development and Communications to lead the fundraising and public relations activities of the agency. The Director of Development and Communications will be responsible for implementing and growing an annual giving and major gifts program, grants development and corporate giving. The person will also lead the agency’s public relations efforts. We are seeking a self-driven individual who is first and foremost passionate about the work of RT, to lead a team in accomplishing our growing and evolving development and communication needs, and has a desire to join a small but committed team that thrives on making a positive impact within their community.

Job Requirements:

- Provide vital input into both the short and long term communications and fundraising strategies for Refugee Transitions.


- Determine and implement relationship management strategies for retention, upgrade, and acquisition of donors/funders to support increasing operations and staffing. (Including identifying and cultivating potential and existing donors through correspondence, telephone and email communication, and in-person visits and presentations.)

- Lead efforts to research, identify, and form relationships with new foundation/corporate funders, set up meetings, write and review proposals and reports (in collaboration with Sr. Development and Communications Coordinator), and secure new funding sources

- Work with Executive Director to develop strategies to secure facilities fundings (for our existing community site or a new site)

- Implement and evolve Refugee Transitions’ current fund development activities and programs (such as annual benefit dinner) through coordination with staff, ED, and Board of Directors

- Manage and provide ongoing support and training for the development team to help them achieve their goals

- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintain accountability standards to donors, and ensure compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives

- Assure proper planning including goal setting, strategy identification, benchmarking, and evaluation to support fund development

- Engage interns and volunteers for special fund development projects.


- Lead the agency’s communication efforts:

- Supervise the development and communications team and review/sign off on the materials and assets produced by the team (including e-newsletters, appeals, social media campaigns, blog posts, materials for media, branded printable).

- Represent RT at community events and seek out high-ROI presentation opportunities.


- An exceptional development professional with 5 years of experience

- A record of quantifiable success in fundraising, with experience raising $350,000 in unrestricted funds and securing foundation grants to increase budget size

- Commitment to educational services and refugee/immigrant issues as well as an interest in working with community-based educational programs

- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of private giving trends, local community foundation grantmaking, corporate philanthropy, and government funders

- High level of maturity, motivation, and flexibility, as well as a firm commitment and ability to develop high-quality work products

- Strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to work well with a diverse range of individuals, exhibiting diplomacy and good judgment in man­aging interactions with individuals at all levels inside and outside the organization

- Substantial experience engaging a senior leadership team, managing employees, and working with boards and volunteers

- Ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and self manage to deadlines

- Flexible schedule and ability to travel within the Bay Area, including the ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary

- Exceptional written and oral communication skills (with the ability to convey a deep understanding of issues affecting marginalized communities in an impactful way)

- Track record of effective e-appeals, newsletters; familiarity with social media platforms, social media management, nonprofit social media trends; and track record of successful online fundraising via website donation page, emails, social media

- Strong computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office products and past experience managing donor relationships using an online data platform and e-marketing communications systems

- Ability to multitask, handle interruptions and competing priorities

- Strong organizational, project, budget and time management skills


- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in related field is desirable.

- Advocacy experience on behalf of marginalized communities


Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare, and review curriculum and students' lessons; standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and write on whiteboard; kneeling, bending of the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally to write on whiteboard or retrieve books and materials.


- Must be able to accept assignments between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The shift assignments may also include some evenings and weekends.
