Opportunity



The Area Vice President (AVP), Core Accounts will provide effective leadership in the planning and execution of the business strategy and overall management for the regional book of business within the 100-1999 segment (mid-market / Core Accounts) in the Northern California region. The AVP is accountable for both short-term and long-range membership and operating income objectives, establishing effective sales distribution channels, providing direction to sales executives, account management, sales analysis leaders, and service team members. This leader will report to the General Manager, Core Accounts and will lead a team of sales, account management, and service team within the Northern California region driving overall market membership. As a senior member of the Core Accounts leadership team, the AVP leader is responsible for shaping and executing all strategic and operational decisions affecting the region. Prior experience in growing market share in the 100+ group market is critical.


The position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and a robust relocation package is provided. This role is a Senior Director level position within Blue Shield of California, with an external business title of Area Vice President, Core Accounts.


The ideal candidate must bring advanced consultative and relationship building skills to build strong partnerships and reputation with staff, employer groups, brokers, while ensuring an excellent client experience. The AVP must be able to build and lead a strategic sales and service approach within the team that truly differentiates Blue Shield in the marketplace.


• Lead the sales, account management, and service teams to achieve designated goals and grow Blue Shield of California market share.
• Develop effective partnership with commercial underwriting and marketing leaders in developing and implementing customer acquisition and retention strategies.
• Facilitates Core Accounts "customer experience" and desired operational outcomes supported by the cross-functional markets support teams.
• Partner with other BSC cross-functional teams to ensure services provided to our members is effective and meets the changing needs of our customers.
• This person will build and maintain relationships and reputation within the industry with a high degree of integrity.
• Demonstrate exceptional communication and leadership skills, including presentation and motivational leadership skills.
• Has a proven customer focus and delivers on commitments to client groups.
• Demonstrate a strong performance orientation and skillful strategic thinking.

• Provide effective leadership to the Core Accounts sales executives and local management staff, including, but not limited to, other cross-functional leaders throughout BSC.
• Educate and keep BSC current on changes in the marketplace as well as state and federal regulatory changes.
• Provide effective leadership in attracting and retaining top talent to drive the business results for this business segment.
• Work in partnership with brokers, vendors, and other key stakeholders to deliver the service and products required.
• Travel up to 40%.







Qualifications:



A Bachelor's degree in business or marketing required; advanced business degree preferred; Five to eight years of sales leadership experience in healthcare sales organizations or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. An active life insurance license is required.


• 5-7 years sales experience in the 100+ group market segment / mid-market segment, preferable to have 2 years in a sales leadership role or comparable experience consistent with leading and driving positive market share growth and market perception
• Track record of building strong relationships with customers and consultants, preferably in California
• Known and respected in the Northern California market
• Demonstrated success with consultative sales in a complex health plan or related sales environment.
• Prior track record demonstrating success at growing and retaining market segment membership.
• Proven ability to influence various stakeholders within a matrixed organization.
• Prior experience managing multi-functional sales organization teams.
• Strong technical background. Underwriting experience a plus.
