Tasks
- Identify the main types of timber-based products to be received at Swiftwood Forest Products Ltd; Stack and store timber based products safely and in compliance with company procedures.
- Examine and monitor logs and rough lumber to decide best lumber cuts; operate one or more saws to cut lumber according to specifications, using knowledge of lumber sizes and properties; Sort lumber according to grade, species, width, and length
- Study work orders of Swiftwood Forest Products Ltd. to determine type, quantity, and dimensions of lumber needed
- Operate automated lumbermill equipment from consoles
- Saw or split shingles and shakes
- Start conveyor system to move logs and lumber to and from saws; Remove lumber from conveyor belt after it has been cut and trim rough edges, using power planer
- Performing routine maintenance on the machinery to keep it in good working condition. This can include cleaning and lubricating sawmill equipment, sharpening blades, lubricating moving parts, and replacing worn or broken parts.
- Collaborating with other members of the production team, such as quality control personnel and machine maintenance technicians, to ensure that production targets are met and that finished products meet customer specifications.
- Move controls to set depth and angle of cut and to start saw
- Mark identifying information on lumber
- Start up, shut down, and adjust sawing machines, performing routine maintenance such as lubricating, cleaning, and changing saw blades; Notify supervisor of defective logs
- Observe operation of saw to detect binding or other problems; Cut test boards from each log to check for defects, such as knots, that would cause waste
- Saw, trim and plane rough lumber into dressed lumber of various sizes; Select the appropriate saw blade for each type of lumber to be cut, based on thickness, hardness, and grain direction
- Position logs on carriage of sawmill and align them with guide rails, using handspikes
- Ensuring the safety of the work environment by following proper safety procedures, such as wearing relevant and necessary protective gear, like protective goggles or other eye protection, hard hats, safety gloves; and ensuring that machinery is properly guarded.
- Dispose of possibly hazardous waste material created in the cutting process, such as swarf, scrap and slugs, sort according to regulations, and clean up workplace.
