Job Description:

The Associate General Counsel assists the Office of General Counsel with providing legal advice and counsel to all levels of staff and ensures that credit union operations are in accordance with the standards established by law and regulation, while also protecting the organization’s legal interests.

  • Support the Office of General Counsel by monitoring the regulations governing financial institutions, including those issued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, National Credit Union Administration, and Federal Trade Commission, as well as international data privacy laws and directives, insurance regulations, etc.
  • Form and/or participate in cross-departmental project teams to advise on and address compliance issues.
  • Advise business lines on regulatory aspects of new product development, such as the drafting of disclosures and agreements, and revising policies and procedures.
  • Review marketing collateral and notifications to the public for regulatory compliance and compliance with social media platform terms and conditions.
  • Support the Office of General Counsel in reviewing and negotiating domestic and international contracts, such as master services agreements, non-disclosure agreements, statements of work, software as a service or SaaS agreements, and service level agreements.
  • Support international representative offices in Europe and Africa with legal inquiries and working with local counsel when necessary.
  • Review and advise business lines on legal documents, such as powers of attorney, court orders, subpoenas, guardianship appointments and letters of administration.
  • Support the Office of General Counsel in conducting investigations, reviewing employment matters, and conducting legal research.
  • Participate in credit union training programs and improve professional development by participating in continuing education legal courses, certificate programs and seminars.

  • Juris Doctor or L.L.M. and admission to the NY State Bar
  • Work assignments require the use of independent judgment on legal issues that relate to compliance laws, vendor contracts, Federal and State laws, NCUA rules and regulations, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong project management skills, including organizational skills 
  • Must work well with colleagues at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work effectively independently
