Job Description:
This position will interface with colleagues across GR&E as well as the business units, primarily Personal Care for absorbent products.

Candidates should have expertise in one or more areas that impact absorbent materials and products. These should include a solid understanding of material development, including an understanding of material properties of polymers, cellulosic and synthetic fibers, superabsorbents and other materials which could be suitable for personal care products.

Prior work with polymer processing and extrusion and material processing is desired. An understanding of factors influencing fluid flow in porous materials is beneficial, including capillary pressure and permeability, as is an understanding of mechanical properties of materials and processes used to make absorbent structures. Understanding surface phenomena, characterization and manipulation of materials across length-scales, and the impact of these various materials and properties on fluid flow is beneficial.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with expertise from lab-scale experimentation to pilot-scale development; commercial scale-up experience is also helpful. The focus of this role is on early- to mid-stage development, with a demonstrated ability to drive projects and function as part of a larger team to accomplish project goals. Excellent collaborative skills across functional areas are a must.
The incumbent reports to a Team Leader and receives direction in the form of project objectives.

Responsibilities:
Lead small or contribute to large science and technology development projects which may span the range from conception through pilot-scale and initial stages of commercialization with BU partners.
Develop, communicate, and document project plans and results with appropriate stakeholders.
Set high standards for scientific excellence in the pursuit of project objectives.
Provide protection to technologies, processes, materials, and products through appropriate use of patents and trade secrets.
Plan and carry out project responsibilities with limited assistance and direction while providing appropriate updates to team and stakeholders.


Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
An advanced degree in chemistry, materials science, and engineering, or a related major scientific or engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
Four or more years of direct industrial experience in the areas listed below, along with a BS degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline, may be substituted for an advanced degree.
An understanding of polymers, polymer extrusion and the ability to scale up bench experiments to create a new process.
An understanding and ability to manipulate molecular to macro-scale factors influencing capillary fluid flow, permeability, and mechanical properties of highly porous materials.
A demonstrated ability to solve complex problems which require significant personal technical expertise. Exemplary use of the scientific method.
A mindset to collaborate in a global setting across multiple technical groups and BU functions such as R&E, marketing, and procurement.
A track record of documenting results in internal or open literature publications.
Demonstrated continuous personal improvement in scientific and leadership skills thru attending classes, conferences, and other forms of training.

Other Desired Qualifications:
PhD in materials science and engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering or a closely related field with an emphasis in absorbent materials research.
2-4 years industrial research experience, preferably including fluid flow in porous materials and knowledge of synthetic and natural fibers, superabsorbents, and forming processes.
Experience in manipulation of polymer structure/property relationships and polymer processing.
Ability for scale-up of laboratory-based polymer research results to pilot and commercial scale.
Use of modeling tools (molecular, meso-, or macro-scale) and results to guide research projects.
Knowledge in data science/machine learning tools and techniques
Experience with analysis tools and computer programs for statistical analysis and design of experiments.
