Job Description:

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate I position to work in Miami, Florida.


The position is concerned with providing operations and logistic support to observational programs and will involve close collaboration with scientists at RSMAS and the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML).


Duties include but are not limited to:



  • Operations and logistics management, including:

    • distribution planning,

      • manage global drifter distribution based on the number of available drifters, deployment opportunities, regional collaborators, and areas of interest



    • work closely with transport specialists to efficiently and cost effectively transport drifters to partnering agencies around the world,

    • detailed inventory control system,

      • maintain an accurate inventory of drifters stored at various locations around the world

      • maintain/update drifter metadata to account for staging time, transit time, time in storage, overall shelf-life, etc.



    • drifter life-time monitoring,

      • analyze life expectancy based on multiple parameters, including drifter manufacturer, drifter type, location, shelf-life, etc.



    • proper and safe storage of driftersonsite, and

      • warehouse management duties include drifter rotation to ensure storage times are minimized, pallet identification for easy reference and categorization, and close collaboration with drifter manufacturers to ensure product packaging and palletization are uniform and of the highest quality.



    • inspection of drifter shipments both inbound and outbound.

      • Proper packaging, palletization, labels, drifter identification, etc.





  • Software Maintenance/Development

    • updating and maintaining the inventory management systems (on-site training available) and

    • updating and maintaining the drifter metadata database (on-site training available).




MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree or higher and relevant experience in warehouse management, operations and logistics, strategic planning, or related field.

  • The incumbent must be able to lift ~50lbs (the weight of a single drifter), and also have excellent written and oral communication skills in order to communicate with a diverse group of people in large collaborative projects.

  • Necessary skills include organization, time management, and attention to detail.

    • Experience programming in SQL, Python, and/or Matlab languages are a positive, as the incumbent will be required to know these programming languages to succeed. On-site training is available.




ANY LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:



  • Forklift driver certification is a positive, but onsite training is also available.
