Job Description:
The Department of Miami Project to Cure Paralysis has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Research Associate 1. The Research Associate 1, SOM supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research. Job Functions
- Employ a strong working knowledge of Neuroscience (Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry is acceptable but Neuroscience preferred) in performing and interpreting experiments.
- Organize and present data to laboratory peers, using knowledge from read literature to make effective summaries, propose follow-on experiments and answer questions.
- Perform procedures and analysis associated with histological and behavioral assessment of animals following spinal cord injury including, animal surgeries (laminectomy, tracing, cell transplantation), animal post-operative care, animal perfusion and tissue dissection, tissue sectioning and staining, behavioral measurement of sensory and motor function as well as fluorescent and confocal microscopy and tissue culture.
- Perform biochemistry, immunochemistry and molecular biology techniques including cell and tissue staining, western blotting, gel electrophoresis and ELISA.
- Carry out cell culture of cell lines and primary cells, perform viral vector infections and plasmid transfections and employ cell based assays of cell death, axon growth, axon myelination and cell migration.
- Be able to manage transgenic mouse colonies, perform genotyping and coordinate breeding programs for the mice.
- The position will require after hours and weekend work with animal care and management.
- Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures.
- Participates in the publication of significant results.
- Maintains an overview of relevant research findings.
- Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice.
- Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.
- Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.
- Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.
- Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
