Job Description:

The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Medical Technologist 2 in the Department of Pathology. This position is eligible for a SIGN ON BONUS!!!

  • Verifies identification of specimen with physician orders, prepares specimens for testing, and handles all specimens in a safe and careful manner.

  • Analyzes results of testing and interprets abnormal or unusual results.

  • Researches and prepares all pertinent patient data and refers all data and testing results to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.

  • Calibrates equipment, orders supplies, and maintains inventory of relevant forms and materials.

  • Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action while supporting laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems.

  • Administers quality-control tests, according to procedure, and maintains appropriate data recording.

  • Assists with orienting and training employees on laboratory techniques and operations.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Bachelor's degree in relevant field

State of Florida license required

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

Department Specific Functions

Accountabilities (Include Percent of Effort):

Responsible for all UHealth Tower, SCCC-UMHC, SCCC Satellites, Lennar, and BPEI Point of Care (POC) activities. 40%

  • Responsible of the monthly POCT Nursing training. Responsible of setting up, maintaining, troubleshooting QC for each analyte for each nursing unit.

  • Responsible for the initial training records, yearly re-certification, QA, Critical value monitoring and verification, audit trails, unit assessment, correlation studies, parallel testing, etc.

  • Perform Semiannual linearities. Responsible for the process and documentation of the Proficiency Testing for each analyte/each nursing department.

  • Responsible for validating, implementing, and monitoring all current and new POCT methodologies.

Routine Laboratory Analytical Testing: 40%

  • Patient results will be reported only when Quality Control specimen results are acceptable as described in the Quality Control Policy.

  • Each specimen will be checked to assure the correct test(s) as stated on the SID label is/are being performed by the technologist/technician on the correct specimen.

  • Specimens will be examined by the technologist performing the test.

  • A comment will be entered if the sample integrity or pretest-quality of the sample is found to be suboptimal.

  • Lipemia, cold agglutinins, hemolysis, presence of any other factor which could affect the result - (platelet clump, NRBC, subminimal volume, clots, etc.)

  • Will receive appropriate comments. Evaluates the quality and appropriateness of patient test results.

  • Critical results must be repeated on the same sample or a different instrument per laboratory protocol.

  • When replicate results agree within + 10% the result can be reported and should have the comment added: "Rechecked".

  • Report to in charge personnel and document. Technologists will demonstrate the ability to coordinate and prioritize simultaneous series of tests with complete accuracy, i.e., when working in Chemistry and Hematology.

  • Technologists will appropriately prioritize all STAT work. Follow established procedure for correction of errors.

  • The laboratory personnel on all shifts are responsible to check and finalize all pending work before the end of their shift.

  • Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

Preventive maintenance 20%

  • Daily, weekly, periodic, etc. maintenance must be performed as scheduled and properly documented.

  • Temperature and Humidity logs will be signed daily by the startup personnel.

  • Laboratory Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor will review to ascertain it is routinely done.

Inventory and Supplies

  • Maintains adequate inventory levels as per protocol. Rotates previous stock when it applies.

  • Places orders regularly as needed, picks up, unpacks, dates and stores in a timely manner according to manufacturers' recommendation.

  • Check packing slips, verifies number of items received, documents, and gives copy to supervisor/designee.

Laboratory Activities

  • Keeps lab clean, neat, and organized. Performs housekeeping duties to remove clutter.

  • Removes, empty boxes and recyclable material and disposes of them as per Standard Operating Procedures. Prepares biohazard containers for use and then disposal.

  • Assists in the maintenance of hardware by changing paper, labels, and/or printer ribbons when necessary.
