VIS INTERPRETIVE GUIDE I – ID# 221394.

Maunakea Observatories Support Services. (3) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Visitor Information Station (VIS), Maunakea Observatories Support Services (MKSS), located at Halepōhaku, on the island of Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

HOURLY RATE RANGE: $14.84-$21.55/Hr.

DUTIES:
• Interacts with visitors to Maunakea through the Visitor Information Station (VIS) programs.
• Presents all aspects of VIS stargazing programs to school groups and other special use groups.
• Warns visitors about the hazards encountered on Maunakea and provides advice on how to have a safe trip.
• Works as a cashier and stock person at the bookstore.
• Performs various housekeeping duties.
• Must be able to work variable hours. Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and flexible schedule.
• Progression from a VIS Interpretive Guide I to VIS Interpretive Guide II may be possible upon demonstrated ability to meet established performance factors and project specific competencies, including satisfactory completion of all required trainings.


Job Requirements:
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/TRAINING:

• Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college or at least two (2) years of college level course-work.
• (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least two (2) years in tourism, customer service, website marketing, or sales may substitute for an Associate’s Degree).
EXPERIENCE:
• At least six (6) months of experience as an interpretive guide or similar work demonstrating an ability to educate in a professional manner or customer service that is consistent with mission, corporate values and culture of the VIS.
ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:
• Knowledge of Hawaiian cultural, astronomical, geological, archeological, natural history, and/or environmental features of Maunakea.
• Familiarity with the night sky, including the locations of planets, nebulae, etc.
• Able to use email, Internet, and standard office computer applications.
• Ability to communicate interpretive material to the public in an informative and interesting manner.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external audiences.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment, to drive to VIS from Hilo and occasionally to summit.
Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Primary work site is located 9,200 feet above sea level with wide temperature variations.
Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high altitude medical examination on an ongoing basis (which includes a substance abuse test).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in a field applicable to at least some of the described duties.
• Firsthand experience with Maunakea and its astronomical, cultural, or natural resources.
• Experience operating astronomical telescopes or astronomical imaging devices.
• Experience with construction, maintenance, or repair of optical or astronomical equipment.
• Experience with computer, networking, or website construction and maintenance.
• Experience working at high altitudes.
• Experience working within retail or volunteer programs.
• Proficiency in a second language besides English.
• Knowledge of Hawaiian language and Hawaiian culture.
