St. James’ Episcopal Parish has, for centuries, been one of the spiritual centers and communal hubs of southern Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Founded in 1692, this open and inclusive parish has long held music to be at the heart of our worship, and has maintained a tradition of excellence in our music program. We invite applications for a skilled and experienced choral director with an eagerness to serve in a vibrant and welcoming faith community with Christ as its center and a song on its lips!

Position Overview

This is a part-time position, the primary responsibility of which is to partner with our Rector in worship planning and to coordinate the music ministries of our parish. There is a long tradition at St. James’ of both traditional choral music and more contemporary, piano-led praise music. Our principal 10am service is a blended worship service, incorporating both traditional anthems and hymns from the Episcopal Church’s Hymnal 1982 alongside parish favorites like “On Eagle’s Wings,” “Lord I Lift Your Name on High,” and “I am the Bread of Life.” Worship is led by our parish choir, a group of approximately 25 enthusiastic singers with a wide range of musical experience and formal training, and significant strengths at most positions. In addition to our principal worship service, our parish is actively discerning how to incorporate music into our 5:30pm Sunday worship service, and is open to a wide range of musical expressions including Taizé, Celtic contemplative, Evensong or chanted liturgies, and praise music with more extensive instrumentation.

The main responsibility of our Music Director will be to plan, rehearse, and conduct the music for our weekly liturgies and special services, with the assistance of our longtime paid parish organist, regular volunteer musicians, and instrumentalists hired for special liturgies. The Music Director will have the resources of our extensive parish music library, and the enthusiastic support of a rector who welcomes creativity in worship music and wishes to celebrate your individual gifts and talents. We seek someone with a true heart for worship and understanding of the rhythm of the Church year, a gifted teacher who will harness and develop the skills of our choir members, and a cheerful presence who will work effectively as part of our worship planning team and draw new members into our choir. The position is open to members of any Christian tradition, and we encourage those of any race, gender identity, or sexual orientation to apply. We hope you will find a home at St. James’ Parish, as we have!

Interested candidates should send contact information, cover letter, résumé (or curriculum vitae) with three references, and (if available) links to up to three live recorded or composite performance videos to our rector, the Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lenow at Application deadline is May 31, 2021.
