I have been employed in the oilfield sixteen years. Of the sixteen years, I have held a drilling position for nine years. I have a variety of experience with different types of rigs; top drive, sling-shot, and box on box. I have worked with horsepowers ranging from seven hundred and fifty to two thousand five hundred.

This was my first employment in the oil field. , I learned all the basic operations of a drilling rig. As a motor hand,It was my primary responsibility to make sure all motors were operating properly at all times. Derrick hands are responsible for keeping the mud consistant at all times. I learned the importance of teamwork and conforming to all safety rules. This is not just to keep your job, it is completely necessary for your livelihood.

My advancement to the Rig Manager position has definitely increased my knowledge and tested my abilities. There have been several challenges. I have acquired the ability to multi-task on a daily basis. I learned to prioritize duties that I am responsible for. I have gained a working knowledge of the computer based drilling programs required to complete my daily reports, measure progress of the hole, and recognize any potential problems. As a manager, my leadership and directing of employees has grown. I had to learn to communicate and foresee any potential issues on the rig. Also, I had to learn to delegate to the drillers some of this responsibility.My duties as a manager consumed more time reporting and communicating with a superintendent, setting up deliveries, inventory control, and payroll. It has definitely been a challenge, but one that overall I feel that I have succeeded at and look forward to more responsibilities given the opportunity.

I was already a driller for a number of years, but each experience has new skills and techniques to be learned if you are willing to open yourself up to them. I learned an abundant amount of new and helpful information related to down hole drilling. More specifically, many solutions for losing circulation, a variety of options to avoid getting stuck in a tight hole.

Normally, I have good relationships with rig hands. As long as they respect their job and mine, we work efficiently as a team. Although, they know upfront what is expected and I demand safety and will not tolerate laziness.
