ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT (VOULANTIARY WORK)2008

Volunteered with Conservation Halton for their ongoing fish barrier mitigation project on Sixteen Mile Creek. The project requirement is to survey the barriers developed on the man-made stream crossings like bridges, culverts, weirs etc. Two persons including me spent 55 hours travelled average 65 km/day in three months duration to survey about 70 stream crossings sites on roads. Recorded GPS co-ordinates, current ecological parameters and took photographs for all the sites. Measured environmental parameters for water like Dissolved Oxygen, TDS, and Stream flow in the field using field equipments and collected water samples to test other parameters like BOD, Nitrates, Phosphates, and Turbidity. Also made sketches for barrier sites in the data sheets for further analysis. Despite the limited project scope we expanded our vision to compare the project findings with historical data, researched the environmental conditions required for healthy fish populations and made suggestions for remediation techniques to achieve the desired long term goal. To finish this task in time Ms Rachel Martins and Ms Sarah Hogg of Conservation Halton provided the important suggestions and share the ecological historical data in the conservation Halton area.
