Pfizer Inc is one of the largest Pharmaceutical Companies in the world with a market capitalization of over US$140 Billion. There are over 1000 oracle databases replicating data all over the world with a 24x7 support with the data centre based in Groton,CT.The number of Oracle databases has been on the increase considering the company over the recent years has been acquiring other Pharmaceutical companies.

My job responsibilities included:

o Installed 10G/9i/8i Oracle Server Software in Solaris /HP-UX machines
o Database Creation through DBCA and through the templates set up by DBCA. Wrote SQL scripts to create 10g databases.
o Performed Database upgrade (8i/9i 10g) using various tools like Export/Import, DBUA and through customized SQL Scripts on UNIX/Windows Machines.
o Migration/Consolidation of Oracle databases from Windows environment to UNIX environment (Part of cost saving measures initiated to retire servers)
o Installed third party vendor products needed by the pharmaceutical scientists for study of molecular properties of complex compounds.
o Performed Database or schema level refreshes using export/import or the backup utilities.
o Installation of security patches (initiated Security patch 68 installation on all database servers organization wide for which was given a certificate of appreciation by Pfizer)
o Creation and Management of materialized views /snapshots to support data warehouse applications and to support data replication at different sites around the world.
o Monitoring /Resolution of Service Center requests for wide range of database issues through the ticket system for users who log in to the Helpdesk Service Centre queue system .Some of the requests include:

o Database design which involves creation/modification of application objects and setting up of logical structures to support the application objects
o Review of code (PL/SQL Procedures /Packages /Triggers) provided by developers
o Implementation of code in development environment and propagating the changes subject to approval /testing from Quality Assurance to the test /staging/production environments performed through a gatekeeper process and the Peregrine Ticket system.
o Setting up of Application schema a/c's with the correct resource usage consumption /Password Management through the use of database Profiles/Resource Manager etc.
o Management of Application schemas through privileges /roles

o Responsible for Creation of database documentation for various database policies and for various work flow processes.
o Validated /Tested /Documented Backup /Recovery strategies under various scenarios using RMAN (Complete/ Incomplete/ Flashback recovery).
o Implementation of new 10G RMAN Features to speed up the Backup process.
o Measuring and analyzing the performance of application SQL statements using various tuning tools, providing recommendations to the application teams for usage of indexes/histograms/Outlines/Hints.
o Proactive Database tuning to keep hit ratios at a minimum standard guideline using Stats-pack and AWR reports.
o Implemented Partitioning in Data Warehouse databases to improve performance
o Monitoring of CPU usage /bottlenecks in the databases using SAR /VMSTAT or through customized SQL scripts
