Job Description:
Starting pay $12.00 per hour. Valid driver's license required. This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by maintaining Society assets to contribute to the institution's financial sustainability and to assist in providing an exceptional guest experience. With direct guidance, ensure work being performed provides a safe environment for guests, staff, and the animal collection.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform semi-skilled and skilled crafts duties throughout the park with guidance. Ensure all work performed meets section standards, clients’ specifications, complies with established quality control standards, meets applicable codes and program goals, and is aesthetically pleasing. Perform routine craft tasks associated with preventative maintenance, special repair projects, capital construction, emergency/safety issues, unanticipated special repairs, unanticipated capital projects, and overhead. Work cooperatively with peers, managers, and clients. Establish and maintain productive working relationships with clients.
• Perform tasks associated with the section’s standard operating procedures, which includes equipment and shop maintenance, safety, and inventory.
• Perform craftsman tasks associated with the section’s functional programs as assigned. Routinely inspect functional, structural, and aesthetic systems in exhibits and facilities and perform minor repairs and maintenance as assigned. Adhere to facilities section operating program standards. Advise Exhibits Manager or Facilities Manager and Lead/Asst. Lead Craftsman of needed repairs and client requests and of resource needs. Ensure projects take place with the least amount of encroachment upon guests, staff, and the animal collection. Assist in ensuring that proper signage is utilized and safety barricades are in place.
• Perform tasks associated with the section’s special events operating program, including assisting with craftsman-type duties, such as, but not limited to carpentry and painting for Exhibits and installing temporary lighting, connecting power cords and electrical receptacles for Facilities. Communicate all pertinent information to Exhibits Manager or Facilities Manager and Lead/Asst. Lead Craftsman, clients and concerned parties.
• Perform duties associated with the section’s overhead operating program. Complete daily labor allocation sheets with direct guidance. Attend and participate in meetings as assigned.
• Participate in the section’s emergency response and animal welfare program as assigned.
• Other related duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:
POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIFICATIONS:

• High School graduate or GED equivalent required.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills required.
• Must be able to work well with minimal supervision, independently and in a team.
• Must have ability to read, write, and perform all required math commensurate with field of responsibility.
• Ability to perform all tasks as directed.
• Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
• A valid driver’s license is required.
• One or more of the following licensures may be required: Valid "C" or "B" (CDL) Driver's License.
• Valid medical authorization card required for positions with commercial motor vehicle driving responsibilities.


DESIRABLE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• One year general construction experience desired.
• Experience in carpentry or painting desired.
• Familiarity with relevant codes related to field desired.
• Familiarity with general construction techniques, including hand and power tool operation desired.
• Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This position description summarizes the primary duties and functions of this position, but should not be considered a complete listing of every duty the incumbent may ever be called upon to perform. Craftsmen are assigned to work in various exhibits and facilities throughout the park as well as in the Crafts shop. The typical schedule for this position is Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Incumbent must learn Society policies and departmental operations and procedures and the park’s physical layout. Seasonal Craftsmen must supply their own steel-toed work boots, which must be worn at all times when working.
