Job Description


JOB PURPOSE:
SUPPORTS TENANTS IN THEIR HOUSING

By: assessing and supporting housing needs and ensuring adherence to the mission statement, policies and procedures of Homes First Society.
Mission Statement: To provide housing and transitional support services to those with the least housing options

Reports To: Manager, Shelters or Manager

ESSENTIAL JOB RESULTS

ASSIST TENANTS TO SECURE AND MAINTAIN HOUSING

By: interviewing; profiling individual tenant’s housing history; assessing psychological, emotional, medical and social information; exploring and ensuring an understanding of all options; setting goals and plans of action with assigned tenants; providing on-going assessment and evaluation of housing suitability; ensuring confidentiality; documenting tenant case files; advocating on behalf of tenant to outside organisations; providing orientation on emergency procedures, tenant rights and responsibilities; making referrals to other agencies; providing short term assistance prior to referral; promoting positive relationships; supporting tenants in meeting Homes First Society , the Tenant Protection Act and other legislative requirements; providing practical assistance and counselling on life skill issues, both to individuals and groups; assisting in the acquisition of adequate food and clothing; keeping regular on-site contact and visits with assigned tenants

ENSURES A SAFE, HEALTHY AND CLEAN ENVIRONMENT

By: providing crisis intervention/prevention; resolving conflicts; mediating; providing after crisis support; promoting social integration; modelling anti-discrimination and anti-racist behaviour; facilitating self-help groups, tenant committees and healthy neighbourhood relationships; facilitating community development; fostering community partnerships; soliciting and maintaining food, clothing, household goods and volunteer services; organising and ensuring nutritious meal preparation; responding to emergencies; maintaining appropriate hours at the site to be available for interaction with the tenants

MAINTAINS HOMES FIRST OPERATIONS

By: managing a tenant case load; maintaining tenant records; ensuring minutes of meeting are recorded; collecting data; maintaining interior and exterior site security and safety; maintaining legislative requirements; maintaining Homes First policies and procedures; responding to after hours shift coverage and tenant emergencies; preparing and submitting forms by required dates; keeping current on trends, information and issues related to homelessness, poverty and addictions; maintaining both external and internal confidentiality; facilitating tenant involvement in the larger organisation; representing Homes First

CONTRIBUTES TO TEAM EFFORT

By: attending and participating in regular team meetings; accomplishing and supporting related decisions; working with property management staff; liasing with and supporting the tenant worker co-ordinator; orienting new staff; communicating information to other staff members; reporting to supervisors and managers.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• demonstrated ability to work with people who have mental health and addiction issues
• demonstrated ability to provide support, including work readiness, basic life management skills, addiction counselling, assertive communication, setting goals, giving and receiving feedback, self-esteem, conflict resolution, problem solving and managing change
• knowledge of group process and dynamics
• knowledge of the Tenant Protection Act and Hostel Guidelines and Procedures
• organizational and time management skills
• demonstrated ability to work independently
• interpersonal and team work skills
• demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
• ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, in languages other than English an asset
• proficient in word processing and spreadsheets.
• knowledge of tenant population, diversity issues, anti-discrimination practices and systemic reasons for homelessness.



Job Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

• grade 12 education or equivalent.
• several years experience working with people who are underhoused and who are the hardest to house
• Certificates in First Aid, CPR, Crisis Prevention and Intervention an asset

Position may require shift work, evening hours and working in a smoking environment.
