Overview of Position: The HR Manager will be responsible for the overall direction, leadership and performance of the Human Resource team within the operating business, supporting the Sales, Operations and Technical & Engineering Services client groups in the Geosynthetics division located in Canada and the USA. An integral member of the respective leadership teams, the HR Manager will identify, develop and deploy business-driven HR strategies designed to attract, develop, motivate and retain key people while creating a high-performance, sustainable organization capable of achieving the business objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Employee Relations

Support positive employee relations activities by working with management and employees to resolve issues in a collaborative manner.
Provide information and guidance to Managers and staff in relation to employment standards, Human Rights legislation, and employment law within their regions.
In collaboration with the leadership team, handle all employment disputes and source legal consultation when required.

Compensation & Benefits

Administer compensation programs to assure competitive pay practices through systems and tools that align to organizational goals and reward superior employee performance. This includes a review of salary compensation levels on an annual basis to ensure internal equity and competitiveness within regional markets, policy development, job descriptions, survey analysis, performance reviews and related employee communications.
Responsible for the overall administration of the company’s group insurance program and retirement savings program. This includes the enrollment of new employees in the program and ongoing support to all employee in resolving any questions or inquiries.

Performance Management

Coach Managers regarding performance management techniques and process when required.
Guide Managers through the progressive discipline process: provide timely and relevant labor law information to allow for informed decision-making.


Responsible for the division’s attraction and retention strategy. This includes analysis of existing methods/programs, research into industry methodology, and recommendation of changes and/or improvements as required.
Monitor and approve recruitment expenses (i.e. advertising, special promotions).

Training & Development

Work with Managers to select and coordinate appropriate training and development opportunities for staff.
Monitor external corporate training & development opportunities for company application.
Work with Managers to apply for external funding when available.

Occupational Health and Safety – Canada

Lead the Canadian Occupational Health and Safety department for Geosynthetics division.
Work with EOH&S to foster a culture where ownership of health and safety is embraced by all employees while driving towards a “zero incidents” culture.

General Administration

Provide leadership and direction to the HR team, ensuring a strong level of customer driven professional HR service is provided to the organization.
Develop divisional Human Resources strategic plans with the leadership team.
Prepare annual Human Resources budget for the division working closely with the CAO.
Prepare HR dashboard and other reports as needed.
Partner with payroll to ensure specific or regional needs are being met.

Core Competencies: Strong business acumen, attention to detail, follow-up skills, professionalism and ability to work with leaders and employees of all levels in a matrix organization.

Demonstrated leadership, coaching, listening, questioning and conflict resolution skills.
Excellent relationship building skills with the ability to influence manage change.
Experience developing core HR policies, procedures and processes.
Knowledge of provincial Employment Standards, Privacy Act and other relevant employment legislation affecting human resources management.
Strong experience in recruiting and selection activities for all levels of employment.
Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact well with employees at all levels.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and responsibilities.
Working knowledge of HR metrics and data management.
Strong analytical aptitude and problem-solving skills with an ability to think and act strategically.
Ability to make recommendations using sound, independent judgment.
Demonstrated ability to build organizational capability.
Effective time management and project management skills.

Education & Experience

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum 8 years’ progressive experience with human resources and at least 4 years in a management capacity with direct reports.

Degree in Human Resource Management or equivalent education and experience.
CPHR designation is preferred.
Experience with inter-provincial HR Management.
Experience with cross-border HR Management would be an asset, however not required.
