Job Description:

We are currently seeking a Bioinformatician. The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing and improving surveillance systems to detect and differentiate influenza and other pathogen outbreaks and report on the data and results to CDC. The candidate will assist in research and development efforts to eliminate gaps in influenza knowledge by monitoring influenza viruses in animal and human populations through molecular technologies, by conducting traditional surveillance strategies and incorporating laboratory surveillance data with classic epidemiology data to facilitate detection of new epidemic variants and provide complete and accurate information about influenza viruses posing a pandemic threat. This effort will fully integrate mathematical and computational approaches with laboratory-based science, hard data, and prediction testing, to understand, and eventually predict, the evolutionary and epidemiological patterns of Influenza, an antigenically variable pathogen. This information will provide public health leadership with information on current and emerging immunization practices and will be used to formulate future vaccine constituent production. The position is located in the Influenza Division (ID) of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Office of Infectious Disease (OID).

* Conduct laboratory surveillance of molecular genetic data generated from sequencing and analysis of seasonal and novel human and animal influenza viruses.

* Provide results of analyses of these data for decisions by CDC in selecting influenza strains for seasonal or pandemic influenza vaccine production.

* Conduct studies and analyses to develop new, and evaluate existing and experimental, vaccines and antiviral drugs.

* Analyze influenza surveillance data using spatiotemporal dynamics epidemiologic approaches to determine trends that can be used in making predictive decisions about prevention, treatment and control prevention, treatment and of influenza epidemics or pandemics.

* Meet urgent demands of mitigating emerging influenza viruses with pandemic potential

* Communicate progress orally and in writing with technical monitor and other researchers

* Assist the technical monitor with preparation of reports, presentations and papers for publication in scientific journals, conferences and meetings

* BS or MS, with 0-5 years in life sciences focusing on bioinformatics, molecular biology and/or genetics.

* Provide skills utilizing an in-depth knowledge of bioinformatics algorithms, tools and resources to accomplish sequence retrieval, alignment and clustering techniques, expression profiling and protein related

* Perform phylogenetics, phylogeography and other molecular evolution algorithms that utilize meta-data overlays to expand context of derived evolutionary profiles

* Prepares genomic data analysis including assembly, mapping, annotation, and whole-genome comparison

* Contributes to the development of procedures and standards for database development

* Must maintain compliance with all CDC safety protocols.

* Highly motivated person with meticulous working habits, precise record-keeping, and strong organizational skills

* The selected candidate will have to obtain and maintain a CDC security clearance
