3 months contract with possible extension or conversion to permanent for a Virologist in Atlanta, GA


  • Our client is assisting the Influenza Division in seeking a Virologist to provide laboratory support for comprehensive characterizations of influenza viruses.

  • This position is located in the Virus Reference Team, Influenza Division.

  • The purpose of this position is to provide professional support in the mission of the VRT with responsibilities for reagent production, virus propagation, virus titration, and antigenic analyses all leading to improved control of influenza. The selected candidate will work in Atlanta at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Roybal Campus. Relocation support will not be provided.


  • Maintain stocks of viruses, antiserum and reagents required to perform the antigenic analysis of influenza isolates, subtyping tests and serological tests.

  • Perform specialized antigenic analysis of influenza isolates from national and international laboratories participating in the WHO influenza virus surveillance network as well as viruses from outbreaks or other special studies.

  • Assist in serological assays to estimate immune response among people or animals immunized with influenza

  • Maintain cell cultures for use in serological assays and for propagation of influenza viruses.

  • Propagate viruses in embryonated chicken eggs and tissue culture.

  • Assist with molecular tests such as RT/PCR, real-time PCR, sequencing and /or other assays to identify and characterize influenza viruses.

  • Assist in keeping careful and detailed computerized and paper records of reagents, specimens, and results of laboratory tests and procedures.

  • Assist in preparing reports of test results, queries and summaries of virus characterization.


  • BS 2-5 years or MS 0-2 years with experience in Biological, Biochemical Science,
    Microbiology or closely related fields.

  • At least one year of virology laboratory experience and demonstrated expertise in influenza research or experience with RNA viruses are preferred.

  • Experience in culturing of viruses in eggs, cell cultures and troubleshooting.

  • Experience in writing laboratory reports as well as working with Microsoft Excel, Word and Access.
