Serves under the supervision of an employee of higher grade who assigns the specific area of responsibility and relies upon the employee to independently select, interpret and apply technical guidelines. When assigned as a crewmember, supervisor or higher level technician is available for guidance on unusual or developmental work assignments. Routine work is performed independently. Work is reviewed for overall adequacy and accuracy of services provided, satisfactory execution of the job and conformance with instructions. Serves as a geodetic technician responsible for accomplishing geodetic studies/surveys/special investigations and projects requiring first order accuracy and precision in support of ballistic/ordnance equipment testing, range expansion and development, and precise mapping. The work requires the practical application of theories and techniques of geodesy particularly as it relates to the identity, reliability, and usefulness of geodetic control data as required in the execution and adjustment of geodetic survey data. Plans and conducts studies and projects in the field of geodesy and geodetic surveying as required by the installation, involving the coordination of specific phases of operations, such as field surveys, compiling and computing data, accomplishing comprehensive reports and plots, and establishing final grid and geographic coordinates for an extensive system of monuments and facilities for the entire military installation. Provide geodetic services by performing descriptive and mathematical analysis on data for several hundred control monuments and facilities on the military installation. Perform field computations and adjustments of triangulation, traverse and precise level circuits from field data and records. Surveying methods/techniques may require the use of various datum's and grid coordinate systems. Responsible for selection, set-up/ adjustment and operation of various pieces of electronic instrumentation. Coordinate the work of other equipment operators as required per test layout and perform other duties as assigned. Maintains up to date plots of survey control points and physical features on the range which are used by survey teams or technicians as aids to precisely locate, measure and survey specific test layouts and ballistic instrumentation. Directs and trains employees engaged in geodetic field surveys, in compiling, interpreting and reducing data. The majority of the work is performed outdoors where there are regular and recurring exposure to all kinds of weather conditions. The work requires the use of protective equipment and clothing. The incumbent regularly instruments equipment requiring the carrying of loads/heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs). Incumbent may be required to work Overtime work, up to 25-30%, and/or TDY up to 25-30% of the time may be required.
