Job Description:

About This Position

The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine has an exciting career opportunity for a Case Worker. The Case Worker performs a variety of duties involved in the collection, compilation, documentation and analysis of clinical and genetic research data for participants enrolled in multiple Alzheimer's disease genetic studies such as the Puerto Rico Alzheimer Disease Initiative (PRADI) and Research in African American Alzheimer Disease Initiative (REAADI) as well as Alzheimer's disease related dementia studies (e.g. Frontotemporal dementia / Lewy body dementia). The primary function of this job is to collect biological samples from participants as well as data from a variety of sources including patient charts, medical records, interviews, questionnaires, diagnostic tests and other sources as designated by the particular project. In addition to collection of this information, this job requires that all samples and data be managed per study protocol.

The Case Worker is a member of the Section of Family and Patient Ascertainment within the John P. Hussmann Institute for Human Genomics.

The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Support multiple genetics research studies by performing a variety of duties involved in the collection, compilation, documentation and analysis of clinical and genetic research data from study participants.

  • Function as a member of a multidisciplinary research team.

  • Organize, host, and participate in community education and outreach activities to recruit populations historically underrepresented in genetics research.

  • Work closely with clinical coordinators to schedule and enroll participants; which requires careful management of calendars and coordination with other staff.

  • Coordinate and manage enrollment activities for the respective studies. This will typically involve local ascertainment in South Florida. There may be occasional ascertainment related travel outside of South Florida that will require overnight trips (e.g. other states or Puerto Rico typically with a Clinical Coordinator). Both may require visits to participants in their homes or to medical clinics/hospitals.

  • Collect biological samples per study protocols. This will typically involve drawing blood or collecting saliva from participants.

  • Collect data from patient charts, medical records, interviews, questionnaires, diagnostic tests and other sources; code, evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare appropriate documentation.

  • Enter clinical data and identify new strategies to maximize efficiency of data entry. Assist in preparation of clinical data reports and analyses; recommend new methods for collection and documentation of data; write and revise procedural manuals as required. Use data management and analysis software, including programs for drawing human pedigrees, basic statistical software and query-based extraction of clinical and laboratory data from relational database.

  • Organize and manage the flow of information to and from participants and families; maintain contact information for families and participants; develop efficient strategies for following up with families on a regular basis.

  • Participate in regular clinical meetings and staff training sessions.

  • Assist principal investigators and clinical coordinators, as needed, in developing/revising study protocols and obtaining institutional review board approval. Ensure compliance with protocol guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies; identify problems and/or inconsistencies and monitor patients' progress to include documentation and reporting of adverse events; recommend corrective actions as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in health science and related field and one (1) year of relevant experience required. Candidate must be bilingual in English and Spanish. Candidates who have community outreach or education experience with under-served populations are preferred. Phlebotomy experience required.
