Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology. Regular, Full-Time RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB), located at Moku O‘Loe Island in Kaneohe, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Performs a variety of service, maintenance, and repair work to maintain research laboratories and equipment to meet the research mission of HIMB. This includes operating small boats and vehicles in support of daily research operations, installation and maintenance of sea water systems, monitoring and maintenance of sewer and water systems, and assisting with laboratory plumbing, electrical, painting, masonry, and carpentry repairs. Assists with fueling all research vessels, equipment, and island vehicles. Assists in research vessel maintenance and cleaning. All work must conform to the precise standards of a research setting. Greets visitors, observes and reports possible violations, trespassers, or other inappropriate acts to the appropriate authority (e.g., Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Honolulu Police Department (HPD), Harbor Patrol and Coast Guard) as necessary. As needed, operates van to shuttle passengers.

Job Requirements:
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of work experience in marine science research support. One to three (1-3) years of work experience with small boat operations, maintenance, and repair. Up to one (0-1) year of experience with maintenance and repair work related to carpentry, plumbing, and painting. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of safe boating practices and boating maintenance. Knowledge of basic practices and methods utilized in the maintenance and repair of research laboratories, including laboratory safety procedures, common tools, equipment, and materials used in carpentry, plumbing, and painting. Ability to operate marine vessels in inter-coastal waterways. Ability to operate hand tools utilized in a variety of building trades, and make mechanical, electrical, and plumbing repairs in research facilities. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must possess clean driving abstract. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain United States Coast Guard (USCG) Safe Boating Class Certificate of Completion within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain boat operator certification within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout period duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to swim. Must be able to lift 65 pounds assisted. Must be able to traverse uneven terrain and work outdoors under a variety of conditions. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Prior work experience in a science research facility. Experience assembling, monitoring, and maintaining seawater systems.
