This position is with the Engineering Services and Sciences Capability Augmentation Contract (ESSCA) performing work on the NASA Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) Program (SLSP) at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).
This will be a hands-on engineering position where the candidate will perform testing and evaluate results related to the tribological performance (the study of friction, lubrication, and wear) unique to aerospace hardware in space flight environments. The candidate will provide engineering assessments and recommendations regarding the tribological performance of aerospace hardware for the Space Launch System, International Space Station and other aerospace systems
The candidate will perform precision surface and dimensional metrology tasks ranging from basic linear dimensional measurements using hand held gages such as micrometers and slide calipers; to state-of-the-art measuring systems for surface form, waviness, roughness, and roundness; and digital microscopes to record qualitative supporting images. Such measurements will help quantify normal service wear and aid in diagnosing aerospace hardware problems from fabrication, test, and failure analysis. Hardware will typically include rolling and sliding bearings, spur gears, and various other moving mechanisms.
Beyond the performance of the surface and dimensional metrology tasks, the candidate ultimately will be required to relate the results of the measurements to the specific hardware problem. Thus, the candidate will require a working knowledge of the hardware and its next higher assembly and how the measurements will further the understanding of their function or resolve their particular discrepancy. The candidate will develop an understanding of bearing fit and operational analysis and will be required to design testing hardware and setup of specialty mechanical tests.
The candidate will have a hands on mechanical amplitude plus be able to perform analysis utilizing various software packages, developing analysis software using MS Excel, MatLab or LabVIEW, writing test reports and presenting results to customers. The candidate must be proficient with the Microsoft office suite. A good understanding of electrical control circuit and vacuum systems a plus.

Educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS with at least 20 years' experience in a tribological/metrology engineering field. Engineering degree or related field from an ABET-accredited university is desired. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 14 years of experience, Masters with at least 18 years of experience, or BS with at least 20 years of experience.
Required Skills and Experience:
- The candidate should have proficiency in Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 Operating Systems, and Microsoft Office Suites for 2007/2010/2013, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and file organization skills.
- Experience with gaging repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R) measurements.
- Experience with computer aided design (CAD) software is desired.
- Teamwork and partnering skills are a must.
