About This Position

The Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, has an exciting career opportunity for a Sr. Research Associate 1. This position will be expected to have primary responsibilities for the isolation and processing of mesenchymal, bone marrow cells, cardiac stem cells and other somatic cell types that may be processed in conformance with strict FDA guidelines. In addition to possessing complex and technically demanding skills, the Sr. Research Associate 1 must be able to exercise independent judgment and work without supervision through out the various stages of the cellular harvesting process (which may include isolation of cells through density gradient, separation, purification, or positive/negative selection using antibodies, determination of purity/quality, etc). The cellular end products of these harvests are cultured, assessed, and prepare for infusion, shipment, translational research and/or clinical transplantation. The Sr. Research Associate 1 will perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological and other research laboratory tests and experiments to obtain data for pre-clinic and clinical research purposes.

The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:



  • Responsible for processing of mesenchymal stem cells. Functions include isolation, culture, quantification and viability, and cryopreservation of cells, followed by assessment via immunofluorescent labeling and colony forming unit assays. Candidate is expected to exercise independent judgments at multiple junctures of the process, take corrective actions, and troubleshoot as needed.

  • Responsible for processing of cardiac stem cells cells derived from heart biopsies, including culture, harvest, sorting, cryopreservation and flow cytometric analysis. Candidate is expected to exercise independent judgments at multiple junctures of the process, take corrective actions, and troubleshoot as needed.

  • Responsible for processing of cord tissue mesenchymal stem cells. Functions include isolation, culture, quantification and viability, and cryopreservation of cells, followed by assessment via immunofluorescent labeling and colony forming unit assays. Candidate is expected to exercise independent judgments at multiple junctures of the process, take corrective actions, and troubleshoot as needed.

  • In charge of FACS analysis of all type of cells. The individual will also be responsible for cell analysis LSC imaging including data analysis and data presentation.

  • Perform and coordinate all CCTRN trial related FACS analysis.

  • Responsible for all quality control issues in the clinical Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) facility including but not limited to media preparation, laboratory maintenance, reagent receipt and inspection, data entry and analysis, stocking of supplies, and the oversight of day to day functions of the laboratory.

  • Assist in the development of training programs and the execution of instruction workshops for visiting faculty, scientists, observers, post doctoral fellows, students, etc.

  • Responsible for other duties and projects as assigned by Operations Director.

  • Train, supervise laboratory staff; schedule and assign work and develop priorities; provide technical expertise as needed or requested.

  • Maintain appropriate control and quality procedures, ensure compliance with current safety requirements.

  • Coordinate laboratory activities with other departments, agencies and entities.

  • Maintain knowledge of technological advancements in biotech laboratory testing.

  • Prepare and maintain required documentation of procedures, test results; record and analyze data.

  • May require working weekends and holidays.



Minimum Qualifications

Masters Degree in a relevant life science field of study. At least one year of relevant experience, prefer two to five years of experience in cell culture. Good communication skills, both verbal and written, with fluency in the English language. Clear understanding of FACS. Advanced knowledge of flow cytometery and laser scanning. Good interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work independently. Attention to detail and accuracy. Ability and willingness to work weekends and holidays as needed.
