ABOUT THE POSITION

The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has an exciting career opportunity for a Research Associate 2. The research associate will be responsible for preparing samples for next-generation sequencing and sample preparation protocols.

The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:



  • Perform highly specialized sequence capture sample preparation protocols from Agilent, Nimblegen and Illumina, as well as RNA sample preparations to run the Illumina HiSeq next-generation sequencing platform.

  • Operate various lab equipment including but not limited to centrifuges, liquid handling robots (specifically the Perkin Elmer Sciclone G3), PCR blocks, Illumina HiSeq, NextSeq and MiSeq, and Covaris Adaptive Focused Acoustic Disruptor.

  • Perform quantitation and qualitation of DNA/RNA using Nanodrop, Qubit, gel electrophoresis, qPCR, Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer and Caliper LabChip GX.

  • Analyze data for quality and consistency, troubleshoot equipment and protocols, prepare reports on progress/trends and make appropriate recommendations or conclusions to supervisor.

  • Schedule meetings with company technical support and engineers to resolve experimental and hardware issues.

  • Demonstrate an ability to learn new technologies and standard operating protocols in a timely manner.

  • Track project progress, provide status updates, and provide the information necessary to ensure that a given project moves through the CGT pipeline.

  • Supervise, train and instruct lower level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures. Coordinate study implementation and scheduling.

  • Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.



The interdisciplinary and highly-collaborative faculty of the HIHG aims to discover the genetic influences on human health and apply this knowledge to the practice of medicine through improved diagnostics, treatments, and medications. The faculty has a unique track record, identifying genetic risk factors for more than 60 diseases and totting funding of more than $34 million from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study and 2 years of relevant experience. Prior experience with the Illumina Sequencing instruments and aforementioned protocols is strongly preferred. SNP genotyping experience is a plus. The ability to work in an interdisciplinary team is expected.
